cleaning threads, M18x1.5.
We were discussing how the rear frame horns are pointing down from the chassis level. if you look closely you can see how the tap is not perpendicular to the actual frame horns. it is rather the same angle as the horizontal chassis planes. the frame horns definitely pointing down from factory.
playing with ideas.

Nice project & superb work, very interesting with the down pointing of the horns. To that moment I thought my horns were bended cause they look like that.

Genius! Now I understand your measels treatment, you peal the stickers off to have bare metal welding spots, right?

Yes Peter. exactly ! I was trying to finish off the inner belly pans real nice, since they will be accessible and visible later on. the only way to do this was to first primer and finish paint both frame and seperate bellypans. there is no way to weld epoxy quality chassis paint, so I masked all weld spots. actually it's an easy job, if a bit time consuming. While some might shake their heads, I have to say that the welding quality is really good with little to no splatter, and really solid weld spots. also the paint covers a high percentage of the seams. after welding and final grinding, the seams get additionally soaked with thinned primer. I have had very good experience with that method in the past.
I just do not believe in weld-through-primer, body and seam sealer and painting just over that.

Thanx Johnny, I wasn't aware that somebody had done this before. I had searched the Type 3 forum for rack and pinion install to no avail. I will try reaching Michael.
In my mind I can see many benefits of this setup. I will have to build a custom front frame kickup anyways, so it doesn't matter if it's a little different for the 67 Type 3 axle. it has factory disc brakes, is fully height adjustable, has an internal stabilizer bar, ball joints. is only 10mm more track than a beetle and I believe at least 30mm narrower than a stock BD. the shock towers nicly clear the BD frame. Golf rack and pinion is very cheap and available both LHD and RHD. the width of tie rods is within being adjustable and the length and position of tie rods is nearly identical to the old short BD or Variant ( squareback) tie rod. There is also a T3 (vanagon) Umlenkgetriebe - steering redirectioning gear that will hopefully clear the pedal setup and connect the og BD steering column to the Golf rack.

interesting center steering rack! May I ask where that came from? even looks like power assist? LHD ? is that an offset bagged Type 1 axle from Michael Moos?
questions....
btw, you sure got a lot of crossmembers in that Samba belly....interesting 'I beams', outriggers, and jack points ...way to go, gotcha !! _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

Loads of crossmembers because there is no I-beams. Body dropped but completely invisible inside and out.
Jacking points are pointless
Rack is Vauxhall, t25 steering box. Runs and connects down the LHS like a Barndoor but tierods steer from the centre. Yes it’s a power steering rack.
Beam is one off narrowed Barndoor (with side plates) hydraulic beam with stock leaf spring suspension make by Demonmotor sports. _________________ 1951 Samba 20-017894

that is totally crazy.... .... I honestly have never seen that topic about your bus, nor heard about it. It's crazy how many ideas we share. Your bus is wild!!! can't wait to see it finished ( ie driving, glass, not a repaint... ).
my idea on losing the jacking points is because of the rust issues ( that's also the reason why I welded shut all the belly pan seams). I will be driving my bus in winter as well. I left the indentations on the belly pans, so I could add the jacking points anytime. Yours obviously doesn't need jacking...
now I understand why your outriggers are less wedge shaped and lower then the originals- body drop !

started cleaning up a bit the 51 frame kickup for pattern/template. degreased the Type 3 axle. Interesting it has a number stamped, which puts it approx. in middle of 1966 production. I thought that at that point axle numbers were only printed. the og paint is still present on the shock towers, but no number print there. the axle came from a bunch of 1966/67 military Variant N, so maybe this was an army spec.
axle has some rust damage, which is luckily mostly kept to the area that needs modifying for the BD chassis anyways.

Wow, i am impressed as always! You are doing such a great job thats simply unbelievable to me.
Nice to see that you have no problems with opening old rusty screws. I often fight with rusty screws that are stuck and won't come loose by any chance.. even though mine are in 10 times better condition than yours _________________ Blog website:www.austrosplit.com

Thx Alex! I couldn't do this if you never had found and saved the chassis first ! Many thanks to you and I mean it !
yeah those rusty bolts and hardware are a dread, but honestly I have a theory, that - the rustier they get, the easier they come out again. meaning that once the rust starts to really dissolve material from the threads, they become easier to remove because they are actually getting thinner.
Threads with only surface rust will increase in diameter because surface rust is thicker than solid fresh steel.
Maybe it was also just great quality bolts and nuts in the early 50s. When you work on mid 1960s VWs they sure used minor quality sheetmetal and hardware. imho 60s buses and bugs rust much worse than an oval, for example. and look at all those surface rusted Barndoors in the UK and Sweden. they don't get much worse over the years even though some of them are driven a lot and in the rain as well. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !
