managed to save more parts of the og chassis.
shift linkage was very rough, but once freed up after some days soaking in Ballistol ( Bavarian rust penetrating oil), it turned out nice and even the square head shift linkage lock bolt is still fine and will be reused.
Found the proper 22mm tubing for shift rods at the local home improvement store
og piece just needs pressed in and spot welded in place ( 3x 120°, 6mm).

fair engine lid. og dove blue inside. lots of scraping many layers of paint and the white layer reveals some Austrian license plate numbers, probably from Wien (W-**824?) or Niederösterreich (N-**824?)???
paint layers from left to right:og doveblue - tidy and glossy white what could possibly be ambulance white?- grey primer- glossy red what could possibly be fire engine red?- glossy pastel green- burnt oil smoke from 30hp exhaust
soaked hinge and moves freely again. managed to extract all 9 slotted screws, which eventually could be reused.
needs medical treatment.

maybe yes. It will be difficult, because there obviously is some real metal work necessary which needs paint removed at least in a reasonable area to work with heat and hammer/dolly. inner paint is mostly in awesome condition. and it appears as if the outer skin was repainted white, when it was nearly new. dove blue seems very strong underneath.
after drilling the inner structure and working on the sharp crease, we'll see how this could turn out. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

found a sweet seat pedestal/treasure chest and frame section. It's a little too early ('51) for this project but will provide great measurements ( and possibly foundation for the next project )
the original primer is much darker on this '51 clip than on later Barndoors. it pretty much matches Ral 7026 Granitgrau and is a little more greenish than RAL 7021 schwarzgrau. I will have to check my 51 split bug if it has the same color.
It is incredible that ALL of these little suckers came out easily and actually will be reused later. even some of the brake line clips survived.
sweet patterns and most of it will actually get repaired and reused.

front axle mounts mostly there.
very interesting detail. this early frame rail is lacking the inner reinforcement plate, that later Barndoors have.
heater cable housing
some brake line clips still there and all bolts came out easily
front axle mount area intact.
enough left to save this hard to find bulkhead panel.

This is the first I've noticed that the frame members are closed tubes (as opposed to open channels). Floor support members too?
Was this stock, or did you choose to upgrade? |

I like it, that would be my preference as well, if I were up to such a lofty task
It's looks fantastic and will add quite a bit of rigidity. Very stout looking. |

thanx for the compliments. yes the original chassis is very flimsy without a body on top. VW used folded sheetmetal wherever they could, because it was a tad lighter, easier to spotweld and they were independent from tube manufacturers.
Samba belly pans add enough rigidity to a (then) brandnew bus but IMHO nowadays we need every bit of extra rigidity with old sloppy sheetmetal or DLX conversions bodys. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !
