yes wood floor. using Aluminium panels is not that easy, because body panels are structural elements on a bus and if using proper gauge aluminium, you cant lose that much weight. Plan on using alu rather on the roof for looks. A lot of the interior I want to build with light modern foam panel and use bonding and modern RV sandwich methods, while retaining or replicating old looks.

cool. Wood floor?
I always wondered how much weight aluminum body panels would save.
I follow Chris Runge from Runge cars on Youtube.
https://rungecars.com/
cargo door skins, roof panel, even the long side panel. anything on the inside could be aluminum very easily.
I will be paying close attention! |
removing frozen hinge pins and screws by the dozens it seems. while revealing some og paint on the 1952 drivers door.
Got some neat parts form the UK, just in time for the 5 o clock tea !
the floor bracket with the bolt holes was a bit off in orientation, but was able to adjust and twist the stand tube in the vice. otherwise very accurate and top quality footrest !
slowly getting to the real coachbuild part of the project !
loving the look of the 16s. It's that Vintage Märklin toy bus look. ride height is the approx 4" off the ground like this. with a few tweaks I might be able to get it to a 1"clearance static drop for shows and could be laying frame with 145/15 or 5.00 15.
theory.

Blimey! What an update! Those doors are amazing, will the og paint form part of the final bus?
I’m loving the work on those arches
What’s the height of the top of the arch from the floor please?
Cheers. Dave |

thx Dave. the inner clearance from the ground now is a little over 700mms. the tubs are approx 140mm above the outer dogleg edge ( which forms the door gap), so ca 110mm above original seat pedestal.
The tubs are laid out so the wheels will have full steering at legal ride height (110mm from lower frame to floor). I do not tub the doors for full steering @ lower ride, because I want to keep them original. Remember I am using quite tall bias ply tires. so the steering will be compromised at a static full drop, but the tires would still be free and some manouvering possible at static shows.
yes I am thinking of keeping as much og paint on the interior panels as possible. the old coachbuilds like the KRSS also had plenty of og paint inside, even if they were repainted a different color outside. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

Nice job on the wheeltubs!
well, i am a bit of a tire nerd....
how about using 14s?
Excelsior makes a 23.75 inch diameter 5.00/520x14 bias ply tire. that is another half inch smaller than a 145/15 or a 5.00/15
BF Goodrich makes a 5.60/14 with a 24.6 inch diameter, and it carries 900 pounds at 30psi same as a 145/15 radial and 200 pounds more than a 500/15
just throwing it out there, just for the shows where every millimeter counts?
I just love the look of bias plies. For every day commute radials are probably more durable and cheaper. i would still rock the 16s
and yes, i do believe a Bavarian S3/6 is a beautiful thing. Always been more of a Roco man myself biggest wheels ever.

thanx for the great info on the higher load rating of the 14" tires! I didn't even think of that, because its usually what breaks the deal for me on buses, but yes, come to think of it, VW also went to 14" wheels becuase of wider tread and higher load rating for the 1000kg payload buses in 1963 (?) IIRC ?!
Not what I prefer, but definitely a good alternative if original tire choice fails in diameter or load.
the blue Roco steam engine is awesome.
Referring to the 'Märklin' look I meant the typical well played tin cars of the 1950s, which tend to get closer to the ground, the more kids stomp on them....

Unbelievable build, Günter!
Never ever i would have believed that the remains of the half chassis could be used again. I am very glad that not all bus welding magicians are based in UK - and we also have one here in Austria!

Herrlich!
I love how they looks! That's one of my favourite combination, ride high/wheel/tire combination.
That's custom, awesome build. I am very excited how the seating comfort is. Great to see other ways to do it.
I am very busy at the moment, but it's definitely time to visit you. |

Have you considered simply starting with a nicer bus? I don't know what your skills are, but the race is easier if you can see the finish line. If you are not a runner, don't start off doing a marathon. |
