The Dormy is fine, though it did try slide itself into a cliff on my way to Yosemite last week. Was on my merry way just 20 miles short of the valley when it hit black ice, skidded towards the cliff, I started a great dance forcing it away from it while the trailer was fish tailing on a dance of its own. Managed to veer towards the right curb and BAM! I said "that was the trailer". Looked in the mirror and ...
That's me unhooking the 3 diesel jugs and coming up from the YUGE snow plow is Paul Bunyan who after asking if we were okay said "We can flip this right back up!" And with him and 2of us up it went!
Since I pack my shit tight, nothing left the trailer! Well, other than the locking flap on that side. Shortly after that a ranger showed up and he looked really freaked out with bulging eyes and all! He then stop all traffic and ordered snow chains from that point forward. So we chained up, hooked the trailer back up and continued on.
So here's the damage as well as some of the "repairs"...
Here's the scratchy locking flap...
Reshaped it and used a drill blank with weld spots at the ends...
Ready for the next adventure! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Wow!, scary sh*t, but no doubt great ammunition for fireside conversation for years to come, glad the damage wasn't all that serious.
What did the ball or hitch on the trailer look like after that? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Funny you should ask! The hitch I built didn't even noticed!
The ball looked okay too. While it hooked back up seemingly okay, I was concerned from then on and all the way the nearly 500 miles back to San Diego. It did well but just to feel better I bought a replacement from the U-Haul place, and for only $20 I couldn't go wrong!
I did also switch the load around so as to put more weight on the tounge. _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Yessir- those liquid cans, if I did my math right, weigh maybe 85 lbs. Great ballast to shift forward. Way to stick the landing- things could not have turned out better considering! _________________

So the trailer actually came off the hitch? No safety chains? _________________ nothing |

Yes chains... Since I was kinda busy on my forwards/sideways motion, all I could get was a quick glance at the trailer's "dance". So I have to assume that it flipped over first, thus popping out of the hitch, dragging and then snapping the chain latches...
Thinking about it later I also surmised that I did the right thing in staying on the gas while maneuvering. Otherwise it could have gotten uglier as in jack knifing or worse because the trailer seem to WANT to go off the cliff. I figured if it wanted to do that, it could go on its own! I was not going to have any of it! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

I always make sure to have proper tounge weight as well as side to side distribution. After that episode, thinking the thing must have weakened some, I switch more weight unto it just to be a bit more into a safer zone. Had no issues whatsoever on the way home and as mentioned, already have a new replacement for it. _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

You do need to beef up those chain ends to Steel or SS ones - apologies if you have hooks and those were just to secure the ends (what I do)
A through bolt with a Nylock Nut works well too. _________________ .ssS! |
