I bought this beetle a couple years ago as part of a package deal. Figured I would try something new and make a class 11 looker.

Here is what I started with

First things first. Separation of the body and pan.

The pans were not bad. Just needed one section. Fitting the panel.

The front was hit and clipped in its past life. Then hit again... so I replaced the front clip once more.

I am fascinated. I have dragged home a 70 body and a 73 Thing chassis with bug pans welded onto it. Scored some early fenders and picked up an early deck and rear apron too, for kind of a Kommandeurwagen flavor. Now your thread pops up so I will have a road map. Unreal.

For your front, did you swap out your new late clip that you had just welded on for a new early clip, or just put an early apron onto the late clip? I am interested in how you are going to do the front bumper mounts. Mine still has the late clip and I was thinking of filling-in the horn grills on the early fenders and cutting late bumper slots into the fenders to use the late-to-early bumper adapter mounts.

Do the 7.00x15 tires rub? I've seen those in some Class 11 look builds, think they are awesome, and got some 15 inch 5 lug smoothies in the hopes of mounting those (the Thing drums are fives). Will you limit the turning radius to keep them from hitting the inner pan edge or are they good?

Perfectly timed build if I do say so. Very Happy

The clip I bought was a later clip because my plan was to keep it looking later. Now that I have an early apron on it I plan on taking the bumper mounts off of a rusted out front clip that I had laying around from a car I parted out years ago and welded them in the location of early beetles.

As for rubbing....no idea just yet. I will burn that bridge when I get there.

I am thinking about Hot Rod Flatz Desert Tan like on this car.

Where did you find the tires? What brand 7.00 x 15 are those? Thanks, and your build looks great.

That looks awesome!! I want my 66 to sit like that. Was the Thing beam a direct bolt-on?

Thanks! Yes the beam was a direct bolt on. I think you can get the same height by just adding thing trailing arms and spindles to your stock beam.

The tires are Power King Super Traction II tires. Thanks!

Thanks man! I am looking forward to getting it on the road. I imagine those 8 ply tires are going to ride like complete garbage though. A lot of the reviews on the tires talked about how great the tires are on their skid steer...

Oh Yeah - on the road. But those bias plys stand taaalll. That girl will have the longest legs in town. Totally makes the military mood. So many slammed rides around. And the bajas are all as wide as can be. This will be one proud bug. Puttin' the old in old skool. Cool
