Does anyone know who built this? I want a "drop down one" save my perfect bus nose.
Thanks!

I've got plans/hopes to build something similar for mine. The design I'm working on has the tire behind the metal frame and attachments for bikes. I might add an attachment for a gas can as well. _________________ ~Kevin

Years ago I had a local metal-bender make me a roo bar with a spare tire mount on the front. Could have been adapted to a swing down design pretty easy.
That roo bar sits in the back shed.
There is a huge roo bar thread somewhere on the Bay forums. _________________ Larry in OB

Those are to support the bar when it is on the ground. I think that one used "hitch pins" to lock it into place when it was in the up position. |

Nothing much. The green bus was the most promising. It had the "roo bar" pinned into the front "tow hooks" and was configured to drop down with the spare. The plus was that it did not bolt to the bus nose.
My buddy "the Foxman", has a front receiver hitch on his 78 bus (that I think Jamie Rivers made) that also attaches to those front tow hooks and he mounts a bike rack into the 2" front receiver. I figure I could come up with a spare tire rack that could be mounted to a front receiver to allow me to carry the spare up front and still not damage my bus's perfect nose.
"Mr. Roobar" is no longer making them I think since he got his PE stamp and has a real job now .

How about installing a front hitch receiver? Then you could attach any number of things to it. That is my plan for the '78 DC. I have the receiver, but I want to powdercoat it first before mounting it. _________________ John

I've thought about doing this lots of times. Just haven't gotten around to welding something up yet. I would kind of like to get the spare out of the cabinet, or at least have the option. _________________ Dave Cook

Hi all! I'm in a similar quandary: I've have the nose mount on my '74 Westy for many years; not without its problems, but all in all better than in the cabinet, space-wise.
The new twist: I recently gave up trying to find 14" tires and sprang for the 15" Go Westy 15" wheels. That solved one problem but introduced another: the 15" wheel no longer fits on the nose mount, and the 15" wheel/tire combo won't fit into the cabinet.
Does anyone know of an off-the-shelf solution to this problem? Or should I just bite the bullet and have something fabbed up?
Thanks in advance for any ideas! |

If I recall correctly the GW alloys have a larger ET and therefor might just need longer bolts at the carrier. Same 5/112 bolt pattern.
Our you could just use the stock 14" spare on the front axle if you had a flat. |
