Next week I will fly out to California and slowly make my way back to NY in a '68 Bug I discovered on this site. I have wanted a Bug since I was about 10 when I collected the full page ads out of LIFE magazine. Now, almost 50 years later I am taking the leap. I have worked on cars for years and years, keep them stock and original, and do most of my own work. I shipped ahead a heavy box of tools just in case and don't mind getting under a car on the side of the road if I have to. First stop will be to pick up some belts, ignition parts and the oil change bits.
Please feel welcome to share any advice or to honk and wave as you speed past me stuck on the side of the road somewhere west of Laramie. |

An adventure it will be! Hopefully with no major problems. I drove a bug I built from Seattle (after I got off the ferry from Alaska), down to Oklahoma, and up to Mass. It was an adventure, and I got to see a lot of this country I wouldn't have normally have gotten to see. Hopefully you have lots of duplicate electrical and tune up parts. Good luck and enjoy the ride! _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

Where in California is the Bug?
Check out the tires really well, as Globespotter did this very same thing and had ten-year-old tires on the Bug and got a flat in the middle of nowhere on Route 66,
Bring a scissor jack, points, condenser, timing light, plugs, spare accelerator cable and clutch cable, flashlight, wiring, spare oil.. And check out the car really well before starting out.
Show us some pictures of it.
Good luck,

Take your time. Don't push it. If something doesn't seem or feel right, stop and check it out.
And welcome to the club. Most of us will tell you that these are fun cars, easy to love and endlessly entertaining.
Good luck. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/images/smiles/eusa_dance.gif |

So here it is, the ride I'm riding to upstate NY from Sacramento, CA. It is a 1968 Automatic StickShift Royal Red sedan. I have a thing for unique transmissions, and this is somewhat similar to Chrysler's Simplimatic of the early 1940s. I have enjoyed the somewhat self-shifting Prestomatic and Tip-Toe shift in other Fluid Drive Chryslers, all were better than what most people think.
Every old car has its share of surprises and secrets for a new owner and I know that pitfalls and pitstops are likely. I've done this before, once having driven a troubled '53 Studebaker from LA to home. I spent equal time behind the wheel and under the car. That was a very deceitful car and a stupid eBay impulse buy, whereas this car seems to have had a better life with just one owner until 2015.
Based on the feedback here I have added an accelerator cable to my list of parts to buy before leaving Sacramento. I will have manuals with me too. Are there any parts uniquely AutoStick I should bring along?
Thank you all,
Justin |

I'm not sure how compression works.
Turbos don't produce torque, they produce HP. Instead of torque.
The real problem with NA engines is you don't hear the nice whine of the turbo as it spools up.
Before I commit, I'm going to do more research because I don't really know what piston rings are. |

Have a safe trip, slow and easy! I'd probably wire in a Usb/12v combo charger, unless it has a working lighter socket. Handy for keeping your phone and tablet charged for the long haul so that you can update us as you go and get advice if needed. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Sounds like a fun way to start!!!!
Make sure the spare is in good shape. If not already stated, be sure there is a lug wrench and a WORKING jack. It would suck to get a flat and not be able to easily change it. _________________ Jimbo

Don't forget your AAA card.
Much safer to wrench in that night's hotel parking lot compared to the side of the road.
Good luck! Take pictures & enjoy the ride! It'll be one to remember for sure! _________________ 1973 Standard Beetle
