Anyone found the best color match for the original door and kick panels for 1967 Panel van?

I have thought to use RAL 7010 Tarpaulin grey, but could it be there a better match?

My local hardware store has a spectrophotometer in the paint department. I’ve taken items to them & they can do a very good match. If those are your panels... the area up near the top looks unmolested & like it has not been faded (right by the parcel tray).

Remember this trick if you ever need to match your wall paint to your sofa cushions. Wink

I think those look wonderful, considering they are over 50 years old... i'd leave them original, as is... why ruin over 50 years of wear?

I won't paint these but new panels.

The spectrophotometer trick could be a very good idea to try, thanks!

They seem much better than my 1967 panels. Wink

You could sell those and buy a nice new repro set and still be ahead financially as opposed to spray bombing originals.

What does the sticker on the panel on the left say?

It may be NOS, but is it NOS made by VW?

Do you think that is how a 50s/60s Genuine VW part would have been labeled? Nah. That and details of the panel say it is not NOS VW production from 50s/60s. I would not use that as what the kick panel looked like when the bus was new.

That left kick is for a '61-63 bus made 6/60 through 12/ 62 with early headlight bucket and later fusebox - 8 fuse with spade terminal wires.

FWIW, in my 66 kombi, I flattened the original kick panels. They had been painted black, I re-painted them grey. Then re-installed in the bus. The rest of the panels were missing, but I thought it nice to re-use the kicks in there. The kombi isn't fancy, but velvet green is nice.

To the OP, might just get paint colour matched to the original panels, on a more unscuffed area.

Does the card have any manufacturer's marks on the reverse? It would be interesting to know who made them for VW. The grain pattern is unlike any automotive trim board that I've found available today.

I wonder if they are contemporaneous or made after split production ended. From the pictures of the reverse, they look like they're made from hardboard.
My original ceiling cards are made from black mill board.

I’m not sure but yours & those are (at a minimum) about nine years apart in age.

My original 1967 door panels are hardboard material as like the nos on ebay.

But my original kick panels and roof panels are made of softboard.

Fair point. It probably became a much cheaper option to use hardboard in the '60s. In Britain we used hardboard to cover pretty well any older features in our houses. It was the MDF of its day.

Your best bet as far as color is concerned is to take it somewhere and have it color matched. no one is going to tell you what color they use on their repros.

There are color variations between years as my '65 door panels were hardboard with a thin vinyl and not the painted tarboard type. I think I matched mine to dove grey.
