Pulled the torsion arms to see about checking the ball joints and, if necessary, replace them. Now, three out of four of the boots are solid but the lower left boot is shredded. This is what I found after a rough clean up of the upper left arm:
It's got the offset notches that Bentley calls the "oversized" ball joint, right?
If it's not original, would it be a VW replacement?
Considering I can't detect any play (per Bentley) in the joint, should I replace it and the others? Or just get new boots? _________________ My Classified Ads

If it has the VW logo stamped in that top, black portion, yes. It's looks like an original VW ball joint. I know my 70' buses were original and they also were black on top with a VW stamp in them.

I'm not seeing what you are here?

If they are still in spec, absolutely keep running them. They are miles ahead in quality vs. the junk sold today. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

The last photo I posted (and the one prior) show two notches on the boot side of the arm. I thought that indicated the "oversized" joints, no?
They do have the VW logo stamped into them so, wow, I guess they are original.
I haven't read much in the way of decent replacements. The last promising thing I read, and I believe it was a few years ago, raygreenwood almost approved of the Rare Parts ball joints. Almost.
Thanks, Bill. I'm going to get a set of boots (recommendations?) and see if I can clean out the joint with the shredded one. _________________ My Classified Ads |
