I just bought a 2001 beetle. Has a 2.0 and its a 5 speed. This is my first new beetle although I prefer the older ones but this was a decent deal. Itll make for a good daily driver.
My question is when I was driving it on the interstate going about 70 it was at 3000 RPM's in 5th gear. This seems pretty high to me so I started looking this up and a few places said this is normal for the new volkswagens to do that. Anyone else have a new beetle that can confirm this? I mean it drives great, shifts great, idles great. Ive just never had anything that ran at this high of a RPM before. |

All of the 2.slows had horrible gear/final drive ratios to keep the revs up to avoid slowing on hills & the need for downshifting, this is normal. They'll turn close to 5,000 at 75/80. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Every VW I've ever owned except my 2010 CC with a DSG cruises at freeway speed between 3000 to 3800 RPM.
They'll do it for 200K+ as long as you change the oil, and check and add oil as required for 2.0's.
My DSG drops to 2000 RPM and is gutless at that RPM for a passing without a 2 gear downshift.
Be happy with 3000 to 3500 RPM _________________ Good Luck
