|
|
my 63 bug has had the front turn signals removed and welded over (very common)
and I want to reinstall the signals.
But I don't know exactly where to drill the holes or the sizes of the holes.
does anyone have a template to locate them?
Thanks in advance. _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I couldn't find that using the terms I was trying.
I would have actually liked a template to lay over the fender, but can measure and mark I suppose. _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

Using the measurements provided above, draw up a template you can lay over the fender. Problem solved. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

No paper template could lay over the fender... one is flat, the other curved in multiple axes.
Jeez, I thought you were pretty well served, with an official diagram posted within 12 minutes! |

They didn't all come from factory perfectly placed. I have OG fenders on my 63 that were stripped before repaint and the signal is noticeably closer to the hood than the other side. And they weren't re-drilled. This was the factory placement. My 62 has its original fenders and they seem to be the same. Must have been a Monday morning hangover part. |

I took an original left front fender (that came with the holes punched) and did a rub technique on a sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 paper that I placed on the fender.
I was able to get a decent template started .
I gotta work with it a little and clean it up. It's just a scanned image that's still in pencil.
Just in case someone else comes on here looking for an actual template instead of snarky comments

Would be nice to have these for all the holes. Turn signal, bumper override supports, taillights. _________________ 1960 Indigo Blue Ragtop (Blue Barry)

I concur.
The turn signal holes are useful as the remanufactured fenders don't normally come with the holes in place.
I know they change over the years, so I assume that's why they aren't pre-punched. _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

Oh the Burn ...
I would even think some templates with strips of material would work fine.. just need point of reference..

I was thinking blue painter's tape. You could lay it down pretty easy on the one fender, measure and mark where the holes need to be, drill/cut said holes right through the tape mask, then easily peel it off and transfer over to the other side needing only to measure the distance from the headlight ring back and inner fender edge outward to get it positioned the same. An added bonus is if the fenders are a bit off from side to side, just peel it back up and reposition until it looks right. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

and.. I was thinking Yellow Frog painters tape.. for delicate surfaces.
that stuff peels easy..
Having a known original fender as the guide.. is key
I assumed.. slave1pilot.. didn't have a fender for reference.. ?? ??
Hence the referenced bulletin measurements..

<Snarky warning>
Why not just print the manual page provided (within 700 seconds of your request), scaled to become the template you oh so deservingly ask for? That probably would have taken less time than posting a whine here. You have to print and scale the "template" provided lower in the thread anyway.
Or maybe you'd like one printed for you and hand delivered? Sort of Samba Prime Expedited Delivery? That's what we are here for, after all.

That's the thing.
The diagram you linked gives dimensions to everything with a single starting point. The center of the headlight housing.
As the housing is round, bisecting it can be done at any angle.
so, ultimately I marked one side with the dimensions in the linked image but also used the homemade template to match the other side.
it was still a PITA but now I have matching holes. _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I'm not quite the primadonna that you guys seem to want to make me out to be.
As I stated, I was unable to find that page myself (using the terms I tried) using the search function. Hence my query (read: whine) regarding a template that might already exist. I also have explained that the dimensions aren't all-inclusive .
the donor fender I used for the pencil template was of an unknown year and I wasn't certain that the dimensions stayed the same . _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I did not see this right away. Did you cut the holes? We can make a template off of one on my fenders. They are 63 correct. Or I could take some measurements to verify your positions. |
