So...... I thought it had simply vanished but I just got a note from John Meeks Son asking if I want to pursue the operation of Vanagon Rescue Squad.

His Sister, Mom, nor he, has any interest in it.

My question......
Is this still a viable community resource or have other rescue type "clubs" simply Removed it from being relevant today?

Thoughts?

Dave

To my knowledge all the rescue squad folks are now listed on the VanAlert app and were even emailed to be sure their info was current.

I only needed them once, but I do think it a great resource!!!

If you do this, Dave, let me know. I'd be happy to donate some art for it. I think it a valuable service in dire moments.

Dave, please do not start up a duplicate service unless vanalert is broken.

No, I've zero intention of doing so.

John was almost another Big Brother to me, our Mothers were "besties".

Sadly, I brought this up about the rescue squad to them soon after John's death.

I had a painting John's Mother had painted and sent it to John's Son.

Now, years have slipped away and John's work has fallen into being irrelevant any longer.

It's sad they let John's passion die.

Dave

Perhaps Abel would be receptive to using the name "Vanagon Rescue Squad".

Would be a great tribute.

I disagree, Dave.

As dobryan pointed out, all the data from the Vanagon Rescue Squad was ported over to the new VanAlert app a couple of years ago.

The added features of VanAlert (stolen van alerts, campsites, recommended shops, etc.) are great, but I feel the member-roadside-assistance component originally conceived and built by John is the most vital to most travelers, and I'm happy to see it live on!

And I say that as the designer of the original VRS logo!

JLee, can you clarify what you disagree with? Your post went up at 3:40, the exact minute the previous post from riceye published. Something tells me that you weren’t referring to riceye’s post. Thanks.

And yes, that VRS logo is solid: concise, pops, conveys a clear message.

I like the internet-based format of the original Vanagon Rescue Squad and would like to see John's baby survive.

The majority of Samba users are not active daily participants. They come here infrequently when they have a problem looking for answers and sometimes asking for help. Even I, a fairly active participant, was unaware that the VRS info had been folded into the VanAlert app. If I were to need assistance, I would be looking for the Vanagon Rescue Squad. It would not occur to me to search for help on an app that I perceived to be for issues relating to stolen vans. If VanAlert where to change it's name and become Vanagon Rescue Squad, that would make more sense to me... One button from there could help rescue vans that are broken down and a different button would lead to assistance for those who's vans needed rescue after being stolen. Anyway, a lot people out there remember the name "Vanagon Rescue Squad" is where you go if you break down and need help from a fellow enthusiat.

I've edited my previous post to clarify that I was respectfully disagreeing with Dave's sentiment that John Meeks' labor of love had disappeared and was considered irrelevant.

Considering how Riceye and I appear to have posted simultaneously, I can see how you might have thought I was disagreeing with him. In fact, I think his suggestion of using the well-known VRS name within the new VanAlert app might be the best of both worlds!

Thanks for the kudos regarding the original VRS logo! Considering that it's now probably 15 years old and looking a little dated, if Abel decided to utilize the VRS name within his app, I'd be happy to work with him to give the logo a refresh!
