I unofficially refer to my wife’s bug as Mullet. It’s a white 74 standard we bought cheap in California and drove up to Oregon during 2017 Eclipse weekend. My brother in law bought it at an estate sale and asked if anyone we knew in Portland would be interested. When Xatie saw it she just had to have it. It reminded her of her moms bug back in the 70s when she was a kid.
Her mom who was also one of my best friends passed away earlier that year. We had just sold moms old Honda and decided to buy this as an homage to the good times. Oddly the whole time we’ve had buses neither mom or Xatie told me about this bug they had Only of Xatie’s type3 in the 80s. Xatie knew how to put an ACVW in reverse when she was 7 (She would teach me later on in life )
More to come........

Why did I unofficially name the bug “Mullet” ? Two reasons. One, it’s Xatie’s bug and name hasn’t come to her yet (More on that later) And B, it’s had some body work done. As you can see 74 in front, party in the back Look at the rear bumper. Before we flew down to pick it up I had my buddy Robbie aka asia3b go through it and do a PPI for our 700 mile trip back.
So after doing some things to get it ready, Test driving, and instructing me to adjust valves when I got there ( He couldn’t, bro in law fired it up that day ). We flew in to Cali armed with tools and spares for Mullet’s first long journey in who knows how long. This car was probably just some grocery grabber around town.
So we fly into California loaded and ready to go.
This is the road trip if interested some pictures repeated on this post.

Now some might freak out that it’s had body work and things could be jacked up. And they would be right. But I like my girls dirty, cheap, and not afraid of daily fun. Meaning, if I had a pristine car, I’m the type that would be afraid to drive it all the time. And that would be a waste. This bug cost less then a shitty GEX budget engine. So to the folks that drive around proudly in what people would consider a beater. I salute you. Back to Mullet. We get to the house and I show Xatie how to adjust valves. Cold!
Xatie’s first drive. It says it all
And we are off........

So the bug had an interesting intermittent oil leak. It’s a month later and it’s driving me crazy. Literally. I take it to my buddy who has what I will call a private shop. Endplay look suspicious and tarboard is getting sucked into fan.
Time to investigate.
Now before I go on. That trip up the coast was worth it’s weight in gold. We had an amazing time. We had some car issues but that happens often with cars you had no control over in the past. So the engine gets yanked. Look what we find..........
The worst 3 letters to see (In many cases). Ha! CASE. The dreaded GEX sticker hidden from clear sight. Until you pull it.
This case is toast. Main bearing is jacked up. In all ways. Hard to tell in picture, or is it? My buddy informs me case is unusable. Heads have a couple of hair line cracks. He said the build looked pretty good but the case is shit.
I ask my buddies if this bug, for what I paid is worth a new engine. I don’t mind doing a build if the car is worth it. All of them said absolutely, even with the body work. This bug was well worth saving and enjoying. Xatie was bummed and ready to make the carcass somebody else’s paperweight. I told the boys what the max budget I would pay for an engine and they agreed they could get close.
Time to take out the trash. We salvaged a few things.

What a keeper ya got right there! She looks stoked driving it too!
I'm amazed how many women in their 40's and 50's approach me to talk VW's when I'm out in one. They all have their VW stories. They owned one, had a GF who had one or want one now.
These cars certainly put smiles on folks faces. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

If you’re not tired of this and still putting up with autocorrect. I shall continue with this self indulgent post fast forward to March. Why so long? Because my buddy who’s teaching me and letting do things on this build has other customers that want shit done yesterday. I’m not going to press my mentor. My builder and friend is the real deal and one of the kindest souls I know. I treat my friends like they treat me and reciprocate.
I’m no mechanic!!! I know some things, I keep on learning. But I’m mutha at sourcing parts.
Low mileage case on the cheap. Friend knows history . Before hot tank and inspection. Still at machinist. Pictures later.
Another buddy gave me a sweet 34-3 German carb going straight to Tim at Volkzbitz for a once over and modified to SVDA distributor.
Distributor I bought from Bill aka wcfvw69. We had been talking about this build for awhile and he hit me back with this jewel. Done!
Another buddy finds these heads from another builder ready to go for
a few hundred bucks. And the Engle cam is from John at aircooled.net
A cam he suggested for my ability of tuning and low end get up and go
for my particular set up. My builder was going to use w100. But he agreed with John about keeping tuned would be easier.

Thanks guys. Glad you enjoy the journey. All you guys inspire and motivate me. Jimbo inspired this thread. Although not technical and I’m cheating on this build by having a pro teach me. So this isn’t a build thread. More of a diary.
Researching, learning, dorking around on the Samba, Driving ACVWs, and meeting people is great way to stimulate and free the mind. Even when unfortunate events arise. I don’t do social media. So a lot of my free time is The Samba, learning. I am very fortunate to have a lot friends that help each other wrench. A tip for the newbies. Read all you can on the Samba. Not just the issues that pertain to your current situation. Some of the most valuable information from you can get from the Samba. Is what not to do _________________ Keep on Busin'

A note from Volkzbitz:
Hi Xevin.
I received your carburetor. It looks to be in quite good condition, so if your not bothered about appearance then the re-plating to the steel parts may not be needed. Same with the media blasting, its all down to how far you want to go. With the re-plating and media blasting the carburetor is totally stripped down and re-assembled, if you just want a basic clean with new bushings and service parts, it doesn’t need a total strip down.
Regards

DID I MENTION I’M GETTING EXCITED
Tim would have saved me some money on the carb but once I saw Bill’s beautiful distributor. I had to spend the extra money and get the full meal deal from Tim. This is a build on a budget but carbs and distributor gotta be proper.
So I splurged
Some of the original tin is bit rough (no dents) with wallowed out holes where the tin screws pass through. I’m a fan of orginal tin. So just going to tack weld some washers on and paint.
Also got a box of goodies from Wolfsburg West. New tarboard, rubber seals, cover, and other things. Going to clean up engine bay and paint to match exterior.
This build will be German as much as possible. Wait, scratch that. The heads and fuel pump Brazilian. Cam American. Oh well.
I’m a bus guy. Never thought I’d like driving this bug. BUT I DO _________________ Keep on Busin'

Nice. I know what I’m driving next PDX visit, if I can get the X stamp of approval.
You are smart to go stock on that carb/distributor - that says a tough combination and I don’t think anyone has done better than stock for drivability.
The 009 34-PICT3 is a particularly bad combination _________________ .ssS! |
