Is it me or does the auto transmission on the EV have five gears? Test drove on yesterday and it seem like like it went though five shifts from a dead stop... actually rode pretty nice... and seems a little faster than a few of the manuals I have driven in the past..

4spd, unless you include reverse. Here’s some info on auto transmissions taken from here:

http://www.vwt4forum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=33137

All 4 gear automatic VAG boxes are referred to as AG4. Then split into the following phases:
Phase I, 098, 1990 - 1994 Without a lock-up torque converter, German Built
Phase II, 098 01P, 1995 - 97 With a lock-up torque converter, Mexican built
Phase II ETA, 098 01P, 97 - on - With a lock-up torque converter, Mexican built

So that is three different models for the 93 EV MV Van

CEV 098 01/92 08/92
CFZ 098 01/93 12/94
CGA 098 01/93 12/94

Would there be three different TCM's as well?

Three different trans codes for the auto. You'll notice if you look up the manuals that they were the same here in NA a few different codes. Now look up the gear and FD ratios- all the same. Why bother with the different trans codes?

TCUs were the same for the AAF equipped T4s.
