Basically my question is, how do you do it? And do they need checking all that often? |

Turn steering wheel hard left & look into the wheel well just in front of the driver side tire, you will see a 3" green cap with a VW emblem on it. Just to the rear of that at about the 4 O'clock position on the cap is a 17mm allen plug, remove plug & if fluid comes out you have plenty, if not, add some until it does. If its dark, find the other 17mm plug on the bottom of trans, remove it & let it drain, reinstall plug & fill through first plug at end of transmission (just shy of 2 qts.). _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Don't let it run low on oil as the 5th gear is in a separate compartment and is the first to suffer from a lack of oil. The needle bearing cages are plastic and the get hot and melt. The first indication of this is it keeps popping out of 5th gear on the highway.
Don't ask me how I know! |

my all time favorite idiot customer had a slipping clutch...his equally intelligent friend who had driven automatics all his life told him it must need fluid...so he managed to unscrew the plastic plug for the timing access hole and poured a quart of gear oil in the bellhousing....you can't make this stuff up |

There was a guy locally that stuck his finger in that hole while the engine was running to check the fluid level. I’ve also replaced a couple of clutches due to people trying to use the timing inspection role as a fill plug. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

pulling the speedo gear is a way to check it if you are careful, and you can give it the slight over-fill if you need to. |

FYI, if that speedo gear falls off, then you must remove and disassemble the transmission to get it out. Trust me, that is not a good idea, it's not worth the risk. Yes, I was careful.
Never again. |
