Honestly, the seat is quite simple. A sheet of plywood with foam rubber glued to it.

A vinyl cover goes over the foam and is stapled to the plywood.

On the seat back there is carpet on the back covering the stapled vinyl and hinges .... the hinge design and location varies between the Coupe and Convertible. The seat back latch is also different.

Will you be getting a ready made vinyl/cloth cover or DIY?

I don’t think it is that simple - both the plywood and the foam have to be tapered down in the right locations so the seat sits in position over the body and tunnel properly.

I wasn't talking about cutting new wood but recovering the existing seat material.

It is foam over plywood. They are not complex. There aren't any Springs to tie together or to break.
No metal frame with tabs to straighten, bend and break,
no slots or plastic starter pieces sewn on,
no tension wires fished through the upholstery,
no hog rings, etc . ...... just staples.

I've done difficult......
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...;start=300

And I've done easy.....
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...;start=320

I've not done a Ghia rear seat........ Yet.
It cannot be far removed from redoing my Vanagon Jump Seat.

If I may piggyback on the topic.... what is the correct latch or device to hold the seat back in the up position for a 70 or 71 coupe?

(I think the PO replaced the parcel shelf with a repop, there are no clues that I can see to indicate how it might have been done originally)

There was just a thread about this recently....... it ended up identifying tge various types of retainers through the years.

I'll see if I can dig it up.

Not as comprehensive as I thought but here is the link.....

Thanks everyone with your help! The biggest challange I have is the rear seat bottom, I see a lot of pictures before and after, but if can someone share some pictures showing the process (i mean what goes first and how) that would be awesome! When I bought mine, the back seat was missing and I have now idea how it should look like. I bought the wood piece and they send some foam with it, but when i try to put everything together i does not look right Sad and then upholstery looks weird and it makes me think that I'm missing something!

Again, thanks for sharing!

So you have a piece of plywood with some foam on it?? The underside is contoured to fit the tunnel I believe. Let's see a picture of what you have so we can go from there.

I can un-bury my seat and take some pics. It's in original condition... But under a crap ton of Ghia parts.

I agree, we are all trying ti figure out what you want to know.

Post photos of what you have on hand.

Plywood base, glue foam to plywood, slip cover over foam, staple cover to back of plywood being careful to pull it evenly as you do so as not to distort the cover.

Keep in mind, the Coupe and the Convertible are completely different sizes and the seat back hinges differently.

That photo is for an older Ghia too. (EDIT: Loren, 1958 Seat Frame)
New ones are quite simply....... plywood.

The trick is the bottom piece that molds around the tunnel area where the shift coupler cover is. Good luck.

Tomorrow I will post some pictures from a 1970 Ghia convertible rear seat which seems to look just like the older ones you're referring to. My rear seat has a wood frame. I do disagree with your observation.

Look forward to it!

I may "unwrap" my 70 seat base today out of curiosity.

I'm always willing to learn and be proven wrong! Eat some of that proverbial Crow...... Shame on you

Oh my!

What a mess!
Thus Convertible seat bottom has spent WAY too much time wet!

The staples didn't need to be pulled out..... the fell out or rysted off.

The rear center section around the shift coupler access plate is simply glued to the metal bar and to the foam..... rather tenaciously if I do say so! Even after 48 years and more soakings than can be counted!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I got the cover off whole, my Wife will be able to reverse engineer it and sew up a new one, it isn't complex really.....

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here is the plywood once the cover ceased holding it in shape.....

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I literally had a pile of wood fiber!
The foam was adhered to the wooden frame, glued or simply time fused?
I carefully peeled them apart and any hope of wooden form vanished!
The foam is molded to fit around the wooden strengtheners that run the edges.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And just the wood......

34 3/4" wide

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I have a good sheet of 3/8" ply.
I'll trace/layout the shape of the seat and cut a new one sooner rather than later while it is fresh in my mind.
I'll rip down some fir for the edges and rebuild the seat frame.

The metal "U" is simply Pop Riveted onto the wood frame.

With Summer coming and the sanitizing rays it delivers, I'll lay that foam in the Sun for many days to air out and lose any musty smell it may have.

Yes, I'll reuse it.

I should probably pull the seat back cover and see what kind of a rotten mess I have there! Shocked

Dave
