|
|
I removed the rust of a spare late bus FI plenum and I'm considering the options for painting it. Rust was on the surface only but left some pitting. The inside metal and pain look fine as far as I can tell.
I was tempted to simply paint the outside, but if I'm doing the job, I might as well do it as best as I can. I'm not very familiar with paint or the processes, so I'll probably get it done. That said, I thought I'd summon some Samba knowledge to learn more about the options (e.g. which paint and how).
In short, how do people go about restoring (painting) their plenums, considering that a) they need to be painted from the inside too and b) the inside paint needs to be fuel-proof as the CSV sprays into it on cold starts?

I wouldn't worry about painting the inside surfaces. Nobody will see them and as you've said the inside looks ok. I can't think of a reason why you'd need to paint the inside at all. I'd think fuel and oil vapor (from crankcase vent) would keep inside from rusting. I'd just mask off the openings and paint the outside.
Just my viewpoint. I hope it comes out well for you. |

Thanks both for the replies, really appreciated.
I'll have a look at the tank sealer paint for the inside. Regarding leaving it unpainted, I'd rather not have any blank metal if I can avoid it, so that's not really an option for me personally. _________________ '79 Westy, P22 interior, FI 2.0 l Federal, GE engine (hydraulic lifters)
