The coolant hose that runs from the left cylinder head to the bleeder ring, under the water pump.
I replaced the hose a few years ago, reusing the OEM spring clamp, and it would occasionally leak (at end on the cylinder head) during very cold weather and probably at other times too. Just a few drips.
Last fall I removed the hose, coated the inside with a thin later of anaerobic sealant and replaced with a different but same sized spring clamp. It still leaks and is maybe just a bit worse.
My next plan it to replace the spring clamp with a screw-type clamp that I can tighten a bit more but I really don't think anything is wrong with the spring clamps.
I may have cut the old hose off so do you think it's possible I scored the nipple on the cylinder head? That seems unlikely to me. The hose looks fine but could it be malformed in some way?
I guess I'm just thinking out loud here. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

i just had to replace a perfectly good spring clamp with a screw type to stop a leak on my heater core.
spring clamps are great - constant tension and compression. but they have open areas of the clamp that the hose deforms into and this can create sealing issues of uneven pressure. sometimes this can be fixed by rotating the clamp to the exact position it has been in for years. but sometimes you just have to brute force the now deformed rubber in place with a screw clamp.
on a new hose, the spring clamps will always work and work well. used hoses with raised deformities in the external rubber, sometimes not so much.

Also check the mating surface that the hose slips over. This was my problem.
For me, the coolant tank portion that the hose went over wasn't formed very well and had a ridge in it. No matter how much I tightened BOTH a spring clamp and then a SS proper clamp it would still weep.
I had to thoroughly scrape, sand and clean the tank portion so that the hose fit on without that deformed ridge in it, then it finally stopped leaking. _________________ John.

I've had to replace a few over the years, the plus side, you could move the spring clamp out of the way, and put a band clamp on there without taking off the hose.
If it still leaks then there is another issue. _________________ markswagen {mobile mechanic} san diego area all early VW's cared for.

Sorry to dredge my own thread but in the interest of "tell us how it works out", I replaced the offending hose during my next coolant change and it fixed the leak. Another case of new parts not working as good as the old ones. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |
