|

I have a 1970 Bay Window Double cab with a non locking steering column.
The other day the spring tension from my ignition switch that returns the Key to the normal/center position after the motor starts has failed. I have to manually turn the key to the normal center position after the motor starts to stop the starter from cranking. Kind of sketchy and dangerous to say the least! I have researched that there is the electrical side of the switch and the key side (tumbler)of the switch/assembly. I know the vast availability of knowledge in our community is so valuable and I really appreciate any information I can acquire. What side provides that return spring tension that I need? Which switch do I need to purchase/Replace? A BIG Aloha and Mahalo to all of the Samba Community! |

Both the cylinder and switch have a spring. You may get lucky and just need a switch. 70 is a 1 year only lock cylinder....and you should have a steering lock. Best to remove it and post photos as it could have the wrong parts in it. There is also a 70 only switch as well _________________

Thanks for the correction. I used to be a nice guy, then I ruined it by exposing myself to the public. |

Mine did the same, replaced the electrical part and it was all good. And yes, it's a '70, mid year, has locking column. |

I had to dis assemble my steering lock due to it intermittently locking on me, and now does the same thing. I noticed the electrical portion cracked and assumed that was my problem. I haven't gotten around to changing it yet. _________________ 1969 Transporter

Thank you for all your replies and information. Ok apparently the previous owner converted the locking function to non locking. I will be taking the assembly apart to see how it’s been converted. I’ve seen replacement electrical side switches for years 68-70 with 4 conductors. What would make the 70 switch a one year only part? Would I be able to use this 69-70 replacement switch along with a replacement key side tumbler to make it work? I think this is what was done by the previous owner because the ignition key is a non vw version. Thanks |

I believe its the lock cylinder, not the electrical switch that is one year only. The L profile can be rough to find. |
