I'm a third owner of my 90 Vanagon (240k miles), and I believe the radiator is original. The side tanks are metal and the bleeder screw is also metal.
Does anybody know if the stock radiators were all metal construction? |

AFAIK there was no plastic in mine, if that's what you're asking. Never heard of any other material besides metal or plastic. |

I put a new radiator in it. What I fully believe to be the original one that I removed had plastic tanks.

I'm 99% sure mine was original when I replaced it and I'm 90% sure it also had plastic tanks - but that was a while ago. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

I replaced my original one a few years ago and I recall that it was plastic also. I did not see any difference between the original and the Behr replacement. |

How's the quality of Behr radiators (sold by GW and others)? |

Have yet to hear any complaints except they will not install themselves! _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

They are very good but I did have a brand new one from Volks Cafe develop a 'yawn' in the bottom three or four rows, followed by leaking.
It was replaced with another that has been working well. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

My 82 has a metal radiator. I think the metal radiators only came in the vary early vans. I would guess someone put a early radiator in to you late model van. |

How many miles do you have on the new radiator? |

Correcting my earlier reply, above: A visual check now shows, compared to my bad memory, that my original radiator in the 2.1 has black plastic tanks on the side. |
