My windshield wiper motor appears to be dead. I can't seem to get the nuts off the shafts that protrude up in front of the windshield. They go most of the way then the shaft on which they are mounted starts turning. I can't figure out how to hold them from the back and I can't get even a set of needle-nose vise grips in the available space on the shafts. I have tried jamming the shaft with a screw driver but can't get enough oomph on it. I hate to use a nut splitter but that is an option. anybody got any better suggestions??? I would love to hear them. thanks. bob |

Hi, just changed mine, glad I didn't have your situation.
I'm guessing here that your pivots have broken free at the back, allowing them to turn.
If this is the case, you need new pivots, probably just as cheap to get a whole drive assembly with pivots.
But you can save the nuts. Why not flycut a slot in the pivot end so you can get a small flat blade screwdriver straight on to hold it, with a box wrench around the screwdriver to turn the nut?
The other thing is someone with a lot of wiper experience (like D.L. West on this site...try a PM) has probably seen this problem before and may have a trick. |

The pivots are NOT rotating. It is the "sleeve" that the retaining nuts thread on to that are rotating. That's why I am considering just using a nut splitter, though I don't know how hard it would be to replace the thin profile nuts. Right now I am going the liquid wrench applied repeatedly route. |

Wolfsburg West usually has pretty much everything you need as well, including the plastic bushings that are probably shot. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

thanks guys. I ended up going with the nut splitter, the damn things just did not want to come off or even re-seat. got the motor out, cleaned things up and put voltage to it. motor works. order small parts set from Wolfsburg West. with luck I will be back to road legal in a few days.
thanks for the kind suggestions. |

Repack the gear box of the wiper motor with new lithium grease (not white type). Will make for faster quieter wipers. Just do not fill the gear box, it just needs about same small amount of grease as the old now non-lubricating gunk you pull out. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
