Most of those vehicle owners do not drive the cars very much. I was at a show 200 miles away and some of the vehicle owner were complaining about driving 35 ~ 40 miles. yes I have wipers and rainx also. Rainx works and wipers work even better. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Too cheap to install the wiper motor and make it work.
There are lots without wipers in the classified section for the same reason. |

I've noticed that at speeds in excess of 130 mph the wind resistance rips the wipers off. Perhaps all those guys got tired of replacing them after hitting 130. LoL. |

I like my 6V wipers because when I turn them on I admire how bravely they try to slooooowly wipe the rain away! _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

I have six collector cars and most of them have not been in the rain in over 30 years two in 40+ years. Many of my custom and hot rod guy friends use a chrome type of acorn nut in place of the wiper. For the custom guys it's a cleaner look, and for the hot rod, muscle car guys it a wind resistance thing and sometimes a unintentional wiper sweep at speeds over a hundred miles per hour can be a unpleasant experience as I can tell you. Back in the mid sixties Pontiac pioneered the hidden wiper arms and one of my cars has that feature and one of my daily drivers also has this feature.
Certain car shows will deduct points if the car is missing wipers.
I had a unpleasant surprise with my 64 113 at a show and coming back from a show. I got nicked for having chrome acorns on my wiper studs at the show ( remember this was one of the cars that has never been in the rain in over 30 years, but I happened to be stopped at a traffic light on the way home when a motorcycle cop pulls up next to me and says nice car, but would you please pull over....I got a fixit ticket for no wipers! I told the officer that I had the wipers in the trunk and would put them on now but that was N/G so I had to go to MVD to get the ticket signed off. |

Good post! I was just about to say that it most likely isn't legal to be on the road without wipers. And for good reason I might add!
For those that don't have them it's because you just don't drive the car. If you seriously drove your car they would be on there. A mile or two here or there two or three times a summer is not driving your car.
It's pretty obvious that the ones without are garage, curb, trailer and car show queens. Nothing wrong with that, it's a hobby too but... we all know they aren't actually driven. |

Where I live we have a cruise every Friday afternoon/early evening. There are four major clubs=four Fridays.
Tonight we had our once a month VW cruise to dinner.
Every Friday for lunch a bunch of car guys cruise to one of four restaurants for lunch and there are over 100 guys on the 'e' mail list, usually between 30 and 70 guys show up. One of the restaurants is about 75 miles away.
Every Saturday morning from 6-9 between 25 and 40 of us guys show up at a donut shop for coffee and then some of us cruise to breakfast.
None of the cars, mine included are trailered so we drive our cars.
Each of the four clubs put on a car show once a year, plus there are about six or so shows put on by various charities.
Of course rain in the forecast cancels all. |

Why do you want to agitate and stir things up? Why the sadistic approach? Do you like yourself for that?

As my buddy Mark would say “ oh so many” good points have been raised. I found the interesting one being legal, that is having all safety equipment functioning. I’d group wipers in with headlights and turn signals/brake lights and would you believe certain jurisdictions would take a tape measure and check headlight height from street on lowered cars? |

Yes, times have changed. When I bought my 65 111 ( standard or 1200"A") in 1968 from the original owner who brought it back from Germany he told me he ordered the car with U.S. spec. bumper and over riders because of the U.S. bumper height requirement so he could get the car through U.S. Customs. Anyone remember all the Friday/ Saturday night police safety stops they did on us kids..anything they could find! Headlamps, bumper height, stop, turn signals, license plate lamps, ride height, loud exhaust. They even would give you a ticket if you were bare foot, or if you wore slaps ( flip flops as we called them)!! |

Bumper height is a big issue around here, but it's because of jacked up trucks with huge tires. They have to get custom drop brackets to get the bumpers down below the max height.
At one cruise in a truck had to navigate between the stop lights so he wouldn't hit them. I asked him about his strange bumpers and he told me about the legal height issue.
I ran my 62 Bug without bumpers for 11 years before I found out it was technically illegal. I never got hassled about it and that's not why I added them, but an off duty officer told me about it at a car show. He was just letting me know if an officer wanted an excuse to pull me over that was an easy one. |

Back in the day of cruising Whittier Blvd, the cops had notches on their belly sticks to measure all the lowered bugs for headlight height. _________________ '63 Ragtop |

Yes 75 miles to a restaurant I would consider to be "driving the car". I live in a relatively low rainfall area (Watch your step, there are cactus in them there hills!) and would never depend on a weather forecaster to tell me if it will rain or not. Their track record around here is pretty dismal. Spring and early summer see showers popping up from clear blue sky in a matter of 15 or 20 minutes and it's so flat out here you can see the back of your head if you stare hard enough!
Anyway what's the big deal with rain on your car? Sun and heat will wreak more stuff on your car than the odd rain shower ever will!
With the legal/not legal issue we could go on all day. A motorcycle is not required to have wipers but they drive in the rain all the time. They also are required to wear helmets but I am not in my Manx copy. I have to have seat belts and a motorcyle is legal without. Realistically there is very little difference in risk between the two. |

Where I live the weather forecast are reasonably accurate so no problems. As far as driving in the rain goes that's another story. Usually on return from a cruise there is about a hour+ cleanup afterward, with a car in the rain it takes at least four to five hours just cleaning the underside body, frame, and suspension. If you've ever done a body off rotisserie yourself like I have and spent the time it takes to do so, then it is obvious why you would avoid rain.
That's just me, and many other collectors like me who do drive their cars. Everyone is different and there is no right or wrong on this subject. Drive your collector car in the rain if you like all the work afterward.
BTW, there is a R66 cruise this week end and it's 353.3 mile round trip from my house. Went last year, lots of cars! |
