Hi there,
Ridiculous question incoming.
Is there a brand of tire that has a clean look, in other words the least amount of writing on the tire walls?
Looking to put my whitewall inserts, but because it won't cover the whole tire, I am wondering if there's an ideal brand of tire that is fairly clean looking. |

I ran a set of these once, and from my experience it doesn't matter what is on the sidewall of the tire. the portawall will wear off any letters close to the outer edge of the insert. So either get tires where all the writing is well past the insert or all the way under. They looked good for about 6 months of daily driving but went to crap fast after that on my lowered bus. |

Portawalls were made to use with bias ply tires that don't bulge at the bottom. Seems like most folks that run them with radials bump up the tire pressure to help with that. Just saying that I would suggest doing a bit more research before proceeding.
Now, personal experience - wanted to try a set. Ground the lettering off the one side of the tire. Properly installed a set of portawalls. Did not over inflate. Rears came apart in no time. Repeated with hogher tire pressure and the same result.
Bit the bullet and had Diamondback make me a set in the size that I wanted. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

What Tire Size are you looking to install on your vehicle.
Size determines the Brand of tires available.
Tirerack.com , Coker Tire, have Photo & Specs. |

I smoothed the letters off of 145's and 165's on my '64 so the portawalls would lay flat. Looked good but they only lasted about six months before they started cracking. The left front came apart at around 92 mph; quite startling. I woudn't use them again.

They were originally designed for cross ply tires hence why they can break up on radials after time. Make sure you get actual porta walls they are the best and can last for years, the off brand ones are stiffer and usually don't last as long. As long as you don't have rim protectors they work on any tire with enough side wall and a good curve, not too bulged and not too stretched, writing shouldn't really effect them.
Ive personally never had a problem with porta walls only had an off bran one come off, they were from CIP1, swapped to porta walls and so far so good. |
