What is the procedure for tuning this carb? I have a dwell/tach. Is there any way to know whether you’re running lean or rich without pulling the plugs?
I had adjusted this a year or so ago and just want to double check.

How do you know if it’s too lean or too rich? The mixture screw, even as described in the original vw films that the be watched is very slight. It explains that ththe mixture is controlled by the carb.

I’ve followed that procedure. When I had the 009 in, the volume was basically totally closed down with the mixture out 2.5 turns. When I put my 205t in the idle was lumpy so I started from scratch. (The 205t would be lumpy because it is retarded by 10 degrees). So I backed both screws out 2.5 turns, and that is not too far from where they are now. It idles at about 930 and I did the procedure with the mixture. My question is why would the volume come out from where it was with the 009 and the mixture kind of stay where it was? What color should the inside of the tailpipes be? How should the decor fee on a 90 degree day? The dipstick? The timing and valves are spot on.

This is my car running. I followed the procedure, this is the first time I’ve done this. How can I be sure the mixture is good and not running lean?

lean running can also be caused by intake leaks, get the motor to idle, then spray flammable carb cleaner on each intake manifold joint, one at a time and wait ten seconds before the next spray. check base of carb, intake to head, and if dual port, the two rubber intake boots. if idle speed foes up or down coincident with the spray, you habe a leak. all leaks MUST be fixed before any tuning is attempeted

Bug On!

Let engine cool down. Then pull a spark plug and look at its color.

I think you're worrying about nothing though. I adjust my own carb as you did, and don't worry about it.
