I have an oval window body supposedly that was dropped on a 74 IRS pan. i am wondering what year doors will fit on this body. The internal door latch is the same as a 1967; is this possible. The dash is an oval dash and the rear window is an oval. I am deciding whether to purchase this and am looking for a way to tell if it is truly an oval body or not. What doors will fit an oval window body w/o modification? Thanks, I couldn't find a thread that addressed this subject. Skip |

The internal door latch can't be the same as a '67 unless there was another door jamb welded in. . It could be the same as a '56 to '66, or a '55 and earlier, depending on the year of the body.
Most likely you have a '56 or '57 body, and any door up to '64 will work and look right. For a '61 to '64 door you'll have to modify the door a bit to fit the lever-type door handles. '65 and '66 doors will fit, but the window size is much larger,. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

If its using '67 handles & strikes (then my guess is) you may be looking at a '67 body with a grafted oval dash & oval rear window...
A pic of the car in question would help greatly... _________________ ::: Slowoval ::: LaDawri Sebring ::: '61 Creampuff ::: Dust Storm '66 ::: |

... in 1992 I bought an 11/52 Zwitter with later 1956 doors and strikers... the strikers were not nicely installed... the post metal had to be beaten in to facilitate the incorrect and very different looking striker setup.
Several months later, I removed the rear card panels and with a pipe, gently beat the catch sheet metal back to it's relative original position and re installed the stock catches. Then installed 1954 ribbed doors to get a much nicer closing and look... a stock setup... was not perfect, but worked very well.
Check out your catches, that'll tell you everything...
... on a separate note: I bought a 1954 bug with a 1956 driver door. The fabricator really did a nice job - left the 1954 jamb striker in place and fabricated a 1956 style door to use an earlier ribbed door opening assemble. The dead give-away was the crudely cut door edge that facilitated the latch,.. I removed that door and keep it as a spare, while installing a stock ribbed door.
... there 2 incorrect ways to solve a problem... love innovative ideas. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

Does anybody know if the connecting link from the inside for handle to the door latch is the same for a 54 bug and a 58 bug? Send a bit to long |
