|
|
I'm working on my pans and pulled the back axle and transmission. Cleaned it up and just wondering what's the consensus on painting a transmission? I was thinking about master series silver primer, but my Uncle said just to leave it bare becuase it will just get dirty in a year anyways.
Is there a sealer or something I can put on it to get it from getting full of dirt, grease, etc.?
thanks Mas

I routinely rattle can them. Most rebuilders paint them as well..I am sure that they don't use a rattly can though. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

I prefer leaving all castings in natural form... so I just paint the axle tubes, flanges and backing plates black. |

I painted this with rattle can semigloss black when I first built the buggy 2002-2004.
It's held up well.
Just don't get paint in the area the axle boots cover.

What ever pleases you.... There is no taboo in painting it.... Personall most chassis components on a bug where not so visible my favorite is black.... If open tube frame rail or whatever use color that accents rest of machine....

I paint mine. *TIP* an engine stand holds a transaxle perfectly and makes painting one easy

I paint mine to know what they are...and they stay clean if you don't have leeks. green is giha gear, black is 412 gear, satin nickle is upgraded giha gear'd big shaft or rino cased with super splines 3.88...I like color coding. |

But when you leave the natural casting how do you keep it clean? |

I do like how clean an all black undercarriage is, except when working on them. It's definitely harder to see everything, and see leaks. Maybe it is just me getting old..
The last few cars and busses I did, I painted the trans and undersides with a medium grey epoxy primer. Tough as nails, and it makes it easy to see whats what when changing starters, adjusting the clutch, etc.
