Hey dudes, I'm parking near Salt Lake City for the night, and my internet connection isn't good enough for much photo posting… So here's this from my phone, of last night's camp site. Wait until the camera pictures come out this weekend…… Drool

It's not the engine you have to worry about at that speed so much (although it beats the snot out of the center main, without the counterweighted crank, and valve float with stock springs takes its toll), it's the cooling fan! They explode - and take out the fan housing in the process (ask me how I know). There are welded/brased fans which supposedly solve this problem, but I worry about the heat zone side effects on something spinning that fast...

Besides, if it's gonna get 'ya, it's gonna get 'ya...

Robbie - the argument that you can't go that fast because of the rev limiter won't work in Illinois, I can tell you that. If you push it to a sustained 6,000 RPM which the 1600 will do well, 20,000 - 40,000 miles will be the longevity of the engine.

Oh, the rev-limited currently shakes me up around 4,600, so I can't go any faster. My single port with unknown cam maxes out around 5,000 in neutral anyway… Not that I've tested it………… Laughing

My fan was "welded and balanced" by the Gene Berg shop a few years ago. No balance marks on it at all… Mad I got it because I wanted to run the proper 900mm belt with my 38-amp pulley. And damn does that belt ride low (fast!) in the cast iron generator pulley. It took so many washers to fit, I used a fan spacer washer and two shims! Shocked

Well, if that doesn't hold up, I don't know what will. Been running one of their "welded" counterweighted 69 mm cranks (NLA - too expensive to make) for years with no complaints at all. Last pass through the engine (the bad center cam bearing problem) showed no main bearing or case issues at all - looked brand new.

You are being mighty quiet during this trip, Robbie.

BTW, when you come across one of those snaky twisty things at 2am in the morning in the pouring rain in Oklahoma and homes around you are disappearing you won't be so snide about someone suggesting you leave if you don't like the way the weather looks.... two days later when you see a huge 200 year old heritage Oak tree in Texas moved from somewhere else just lying in a field with cows grazing around it, root ball and all but there is no hole nearby where the tree was plucked from you will be thankful you were late to that party too.

That said - the neat thing is that now at night when you have nothing to do you can sit in the bus, think Lego while watching Tram in old TV reruns on the laptop.

LMAO! Wink

I ALMOST can't handle Facebook anymore. It's always the same people who post three or four times a day with most being selfies. Those folks just scream "look at me, look at me".. Rolling Eyes The most habitual attention whores new posts are blocked, so I don't have to feel sorry for them due to their constant validation seeking...

You want selfies? I can give you selfies!

But my cell service is limited, so here are some pics I had on hand. Still no “real camera” pics... considering I left my laptop in a different time zone...

From the flat part of the country, having out-run one lightening storm already,

I’m so over the heat. Colorado was so charming with its 35* nights and 55* days. Here I am parking under a leaky Joplin gas station roof as I wait out THREE different lightening storms on different sides of me...

Generator light came on as I pulled into Tony’s driveway. Upper brush was WELL below the wear line, so it was replaced with much darkness in the cabin.

And my generator light is on again. Shocked

Hell hath no fury like replacing the lower generator brush in a thunderstorm.

But how polite of my bus to need both at the same time! Laughing At least the soft-as-hell Wolfsburg West brushes have SOMETHING going for them. My NOS set went 50k miles, and this set barely went 10k......

Joplin MO? I think that city was almost wiped off the map May 22, 2011. Whoa - the seven year anniversary is only seven days.

Weather looks nice right now but there is an expression in that part of the USA - if you don't like the weather just wait 10 minutes... .

I had brushes go out on a trip in my 1971, and drove 200 miles on the bus as I did not have a spare pair. Destroyed the generator internally. Good thing you have spares. Smile

Robbie,
Please check out his super great Champagne ash tray that was in the intricate three way swap we had a while back. I love it when a win-win-win comes together.

See you soon !
We'll have two beauties waiting for you. By that I mean buses - not travelers - but I think the travelers are beauties too!
