So I had the front drums apart yesterday to try and get the star adjusters out. They ended up coming apart very easily, so I greased them all up and shoved them back together. But I have broken pieces on both front drums. My best guess is to call them “adjusting screw retainer springs” but I don’t know.
They do not appear to be serviceable... so I’m wondering my options. New backing plates?

I think replacing the backing plates would be less work.
Those do break off, and I think they are there to stop the adjuster star from spinning, but I can't imagine the stars every being loose enough to spin as they are under pressure from the brake shoe springs.
Or maybe the plates make it easier too adjust the star one point at a time...
At least one of mine doesn't have it and don't have any problems. _________________ '56 pan Dune Buggy since '69

Lock tabs can be replaced. Just getting harder to find. Just need a small chisel to knock them out and to restake them. |

DON'T use them...I do NOT care!! They are there to keep the adjuster from turning by itself ! _________________ see ya' on the trail........
