I can't seem to find a new brake booster for my Vanagon anywhere. Bought a used one that leaked, and two remanufactured boosters that both had vacuum leaks. It's been a real journey. I'd really like to find a new ATE 300055 and be done with it. Thanks for any help. _________________ 1985 GL Wolfsburg Tintop 1.8T |

Just to clarify, You are using a new master cylinder O ring to seal the master to the booster? _________________ ☮️ |

And making very sure the o-ring is seating correctly (e.g. not pinched). |

I had the same issue. Ended up being the vacuum line has developed a leak. Might be worth checking out. Also the BMW booster upgrade might be cheaper if you shop around. Good luck! |

I need to speak with my mechanic. I think you guys might have discovered the issue. To have two remanufactured units have a leak seems improbable. I appreciate the suggestions. _________________ 1985 GL Wolfsburg Tintop 1.8T |

Ya I hunted my issue down for a month.. Make sure the check valve is also functioning (in engine compartment) . It can cause issues. |

Bush power brake inc. in CA does a good job on the rebuilt boosters. not sure where your guy is getting the rebuilds from _________________

I should have used a VW specialist. I use a local guy for things I think are somewhat universal (brakes, etc). I just had him replace the brake master cylinder very recently, and on the way home, I noticed a hissing sound. Did a little research and determined my brake booster must have been shot as well. Made sense that the leaking master cylinder damaged the booster diaphragm. I just got off the phone with him after sending an email about the possibility of a pinched or missing O ring. Turns out, the O ring is completely MIA. I purchased an FTE master cylinder, so it should have been in the box. At this point, I'm happy to know what the issue is, and it's obviously human error on my mechanics part. Thanks to everyone who chipped in on the forum to help out. _________________ 1985 GL Wolfsburg Tintop 1.8T |

We currently have rebuilt brake boosters for the Vanagon in stock. You can find them here:
https://www.vanagain.com/shop/vanagon-power-brake-booster
We have gotten some new ones sporadically in the last month or so, and we may get more but for now the rebuilt ones are a good way to go. _________________ Thanks,

Thanks for the address to rebuild the brake booster. I couldn't find one when I needed it.
Part number 251612101A was ATE 3.6852-1007.4
Part number 251612101 was ATE 3.6852-1009.4
Bendix also had a booster for the Vanagon, found one in an 1988 van.
The LT part number is also listed as a replacement, I found 281612101E was ATE 3.6852-5401.4
281612101H was ATE 3.6852-5403.4
Buslab had ATE 03.6850-5402.4 listed
281612105 was also another compatible booster listed.
I opened an old failed booster out of kicks a couple days ago.
It was working but hissing when brake pedal was applied.
Membrane part number don't turn up anything: 3.6818-5401.1
Membrane made in 1978. Must be standard part across many boosters obviously.
Rubber is of excellent quality, barely cracked.
The seal was made by Kaco for ATE. An interesting piece, no luck with the part numbers either, I didn't measure but must be 42x56mm: QFK 42.56 RGFU02
The ATE part number is 3.6818-5001.1, also looks like made in 1978.
