USPS is getting back on track!
It wasn't scheduled until Monday!

Dave just a quick update that I got it installed tonight. I have had a big project going on with replacing all my brake and clutch hardlines, fuel tank, all fuel related lines and brake booster line. I hope before the weeks end the van is back on the ground purring along as it should.
I cannot wait to get to the filling station to enjoy the moment my gas pump clicks off and well.... thats it.... maybe I click once more and then I quietly put the pump up and go about my merry way.
Thanks again Dave |

Big milestone for myself today Dave. After finally getting everything done mentioned plus a bit more I finally made it to the gas station. I went to fill my tank and watched as the gallons flowed through..... and then................................................I suddenly heard.....................................a click as the pump turned off. I held the pump trigger and then.....................................................................................................................................click.... I put the gas cap on...................and went home.
The simple end.
Thank you all ( and Dave especially) for the continued support to keep these vans doing what they do. |

Ha ha ha thats true you have my address he he he!.... I thought someone said the manufacturer still made them but we couldnt find any distributers who carried them? If thats the case doing a small bulk purchase would probably still work.
When the day come just let me know Dave and I will do the search with you. |

In planning an aux tank in the syncro location for my 2WD, I have spent a fair amount of time looking at the fuel delivery systems and the attendant venting. Although I could be talked out of it by someone who knows more than I do--98% of the world--I think "burping" ia a venting issue. None of the vents which are small and designed to allow gas to fill the DS raised area on the far side from the fill or feed the charcoal canister, is/are large enough to provide fill venting. The OG designed method for this is to provide a parallel large line along side of the fill tube. However, this vents below the area of the restricted pump nozzle orifice--the hole you stick the gas pump into. So for any air to get out of the tank as it is being filled, the air ultimately has to go around the nozzle and into the atmosphere.
I know the DOT and EPA are worried about fumes exiting to the atmosphere which is why the rubber bellows were introduced and still exist in some states. So In my opinion, that's where the problem lies. The tank simply can't vent fast enough such that the air pressure builds until it has to burp to release the air and gas comes up too. I''ll bet if any of us were to enlarge the restricted hole size, the problem would go away. When I use my rear tank fill to provide fuel to both tanks, this is what I plan to do. In addition, my large fill vent will exit from the tank itself and not low down on the fill tube. If the gas fumes are venting to the atmosphere anyway, how can this be a problem? And I'll bet it will help filling where the bellows are used as well.
And high speed delivery pumps?

Fuel replenishment is the least of my problems when I pull into the pit.
But yes, even though I recall the first gas station nozzle seal bellows contraption in 1989 (it's a specific memory of trying to fill a motorcycle gas tank with the newfangled device in St. Louis in March of 1989), my guess is that VW did not design the system with this in mind. _________________ - Jim

reviving the thread since it was referenced... this was on my '89 when i did the tank refurb.

That was VW's fix for the fuel burp problem.
My 90 has that same float ball only the ball had escaped from it's cage!
I retrieved it and popped it back in.
Will it come out again?
Probably ......... |
long question short, is this perko check valve worth $25? _________________ so many roads i know

As far as the cost to prevent the gasoline burp, I find that to be a fantastic value! IMO it's totally worth it just to prevent the pollution. Preventing the fire hazard and the stink is gravy. It has worked fine for me since I originally installed it.
Instead of spending $25 on the Perko valve AND $$ on the 1-1/2" hose, you could instead copy the stock design. Cut the end of the fill tube so that a ping pong ball will stop the flow. You could probably make the cage out of decent gauge steel wire. Before I found the Perko valve I considered doing so. I tend to think $25 is a cheap price for the time involved in reinventing the wheel (or finding out that ping pong balls dissolve in gasoline...). YMMV. |
