I jsut ordered one of these Perko 0635DPO valves.

I am also getting some Gates 23964 1 1/2" fuel filler hose.

BTW ....... West Marine is closing out these valves at $4.77

Also adding this to the FAQ section to make it easy to find.

Part is no longer available at west marine or amazon, but correct part # is perko 0635DP0 (ending with zero, not letter o) and seems to be available at a few places around the web such as fisheriessupply.com

Finally got to this one today. Wasn't too tough but I was treating it like it was microsurgery. In general, pretty straightforward. I realize now I probably should have installed the valve with the spring on top, but it probably won't make a difference.

I couldn't remember if you just pull the filler neck out or if there's some screw involved. There isn't, just pull. It's a pain in the ass. I just did a fuel tank reseal a few years ago, but if it's been a really long time, it's possible that seal will be dry and fall apart. That would turn this job into a reseal job, which takes a while.

I got the hose on ebay and 1ft shipped was about $15. Description was "Marine boat fuel fill hose WIRE 1 1/2 " shields 3551120 type A2 Gas / Diesel" and this is very high quality stuff. It has a thick steel wire in the hose which made it a bit of a pain to work with, but it was fine.

Oh, the only advice I have is after cutting the neck (which is pretty thick, probably 1/8"), if you sand it, it can leave a lot of tiny plastic hangers-on, so I aimed my little torch at it to try to get those parts to settle down or come off.

The whole thing took a few hours but I was going slow because i only have 1 filler neck and this is my daily driver. I considered cutting the neck with a blade but that would have taken forever. Hacksaw worked fine. Dremel would have worked too. I used a little motor oil to lube the neck and tank seal before shoving in there. I jacked the van up but didn't remove the tire. Don't think it would help a ton.

One of my submissions from the Vanagon Haiku thread:

Gassing up the van
Fuel pukes from the filler tube.
Two flammable shoes.

I have to reseal my tank so will probably take the precaution of installing one of these valves also as insurance.

Brought home an 84 Westy yesterday and was fuelly initiated to the Vanagon life today. Thanks for the quick salve to the comedy that was my trip to the gas station. Gosh I'll be reading this forum a lot.

installing a new fuel filelr seal doe NOT require dropping the fuel tank at any sort.. you can remove the old and install the new tank filler seal via the holein the frame..
even the grommet on the tank top where the vent line comes up to the filler neck does NOT require dropping the tank..
patience, persistence and perseverance and maybe a little bit of WD40. (I use fluid film, it'll swell/rejuvenate the rubber some).

I completed this job over the summer and now have about a thousand miles on it. I used to get some liquid spill up, and strong gasoline odor with every fill up. Ever since, I get no liquid and the odor is significantly reduced.
I installed the Perko flap valve almost exactly like the OP's photo. I just cut out a section of the fill up hose that was the length of the valve and then slipped the marine fuel hose over each end of the fill up hose. It was a little delicate getting everything to fit in tight quarters and tight tolerances, but I find all my Vanagon jobs are like that...
I purchased the valve, hose and hose clamps from Fisheries Supply by Gasworks in Seattle. I can just pop in there for van trinkets on my way home from work.
Thanks for posting the idea and good luck to those planning to implement this.
James

I purchased the Perko valve months ago...... just put it in today.

I picked up some 1 1/2" FUEL FILLER HOSE (many shops will try to sell you 1 1/2" radiator hose! Don't accept it!)
Dayco 80303

I have a pair of cutting pliers that use a standard Utility Knife blade. This tool was almost perfect for cutting the filler pipe. I didn't want to use a saw and have those bits floating around in the fuel tank......

Does it work?
I don't know.
I'm doing front brake pads, packing wheel bearings and installing new shocks,

I'll soon find out, I'm taking a run in it this weekend.

Thanks for adding the pictorial. I would suggest adding a third clamp around the hose where the perko valve is located in order to seal the hose to the outside of the valve. This will prevent any fuel from bypassing around the outside of the valve. Probably not necessary, but I don't think it will hurt anything and might make the difference between a proper shutoff and a burp especially as the hose ages.

Also, it looks like you set the valve toward the cap end of the filler farther than necessary. Having the valve as close to the tank as is reasonable will give the valve more reaction time and make it less likely to burp.

IT WORKS!!!!!!!

Three fill ups, not a drop of fuel spilled because of the classic filler "Burp"!

Certainly not a comprehensive test by any means but my Van almost always spilled unless I was very careful at the end of the fill.

I just locked the nozzles hold lever on and it clicked off without incident!

WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!

NJ is still a full serve State, I always filled up myself to avoid spills.
Now, I can let the refuel specialist do their job!

how tight is that swing flap? does gas dribble thru enough if you 'top up' multiple times? i can sometime put in an extra 0.8 gallon after the burp and i wonder how the valve affects maxing the tank out.

The spring on the flap isn't at all strong but it swinging away is the only way to allow fuel in.

I knkw I mounted mine closer to the fill cap than Waldo did, This was intentional for I was trying to have it located at about the same height as the top of the fuel tank hoping to allow a complete fill before automatic shut off.

Never thought I'd be so blessed, buying a '90. Never have had a fuel fill issue.

Real world update on fuel check valve.

The Van left NJ, traveled to New England, back to NJ, South to North Carolina, veered SouthWest to New Orleans, then West through Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.......

All without so much as a burp or dribble of fuel on multiple fill ups. Multiple States, probably 4,000 or more miles driven.

They crossed into California yesterday, stopped for fuel with the States vapor recovery system and they are hard pressed to put fuel in! They say a 10th of a gallon between click offs.

Does anyone know of a possible why?

Does the California pump deliver fuel at very high volumes so that it overwhelms the check valve?

Is it somehow related to the vapor boot not allowing air in?

Anyone have a "work around" for this issue?

I am wondering about cutting a short piece of 3/4" PVC or similar pipe (what plastic pipe withstands getting wet with fuel?) and squishing it between the vapor boot and the vehicle to allow air Out? In?

Are they not pushing the nozzle far enough in, being held out by the boot, and the fuel is going into the tank vent tube at the entrance to the filler neck? This would cause a backup of fuel in short order I would think.

Why VW put the vent on the bottom?????

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It is only California thus far that presents any issues at all.

Trouble is that they need to travel the entire length of the State to Crescent City.

They are staying a few days in SanDiego so modifications can be made if need be.

Thanks for any ideas or knowledge!

Dave

That was my first response but they had the same experience at a second and different brand station.

17 States no problems.

Doing some research I see that the Stage II recovery system has largely been dismantled Nationwide beginning in 2012.
