63 bug, stock width adjustable beam, stock spindles, drums. I got 4.5" and 5.5" wide 5's. Want to use the 5.5 wide rims and lower a bit with no rubbing. Anyone using this set up ? 4.5 rims second choice. From searching , 165/80 on stock rims/ beam, stock height no problem. Its a new beam and need new tires, not sure.

I just buy/run good used pairs of Michelins/BFGoodrich/Pirelli etc that rich guys take off with lots of tread left & we buy CHEAP as I'm always changing sizes/stance! Cool

185X60 & 205X70 on my lowered squareback. 165X80 will be too tall if you lower it.

Why do you want 5.5 on a tire that works well with 4.5? Watch your offset. I did a 66 with 165/80 on stock wheels - dropped it a bit all around (thinking maybe 3" in front about 1.5" o so in rear). Works very well.

andk5591... I like the extra width for hard cornering when i go to the grocery store. That and they are chrome like the 5.5's on the rear. The 4.5 rims are painted. Your 66 was dropped maybe 3" in front on a stock beam only, no dropped spindles ? I like the old school stance of the old 165 SR 15's that were on the front. I believe 165/80 is about same size, isn't it ? Basically i want to use the 5.5 rims with a tire that won't rub and keep the speedo reading accurate.

I use 165/80 for stock replacement size tires. The car I was talking about only has an adjustable beam. Did it a couple tears ago. Not much of a rake - just lowered all around.

.

This is another 66 I did with adjustable beam, tires and wheels on a month or so ago. fronts on 4.5", rears on 5.5 with a little more width (I think 195 or 205).

I think they both work. And a 165/80 is to use a 4.5 or 5" rim per Tire Rack. Just sayin'.

My wife has a 61 that I did a 2" narrowed adjustable on with 5.5", but with 185/60 in the front. Same deal, it works, but the tires are a lower profile.

Big B Tires here specializes in used tires & always has a tremendous inventory of 1/pairs/sets of 4 to pick from with tread left on them. They must buy all the used tires around here & sort/resell the best of them. You probably have a used tire specialist in your area too.

Here's the thing with the different width...The 5.5 stick out a little further, so they fill the rear wheel well nicely. BUT if I did that in the front with a stock width beam, they would rub. That's why the 4.5" up front.

Here is mine with 165’s, adjustable beam all the way up with 2 1/2 spindles. Wheels are 5.5 wide and beam is narrowed 4 inches. The wheels have a lot of offset.
