Warning to folks on a work computer... the link above plays video/sound even if you mute your speaker (repeatedly)... nasty, nasty habit of that website!
We are nearing the 200th year after the old Hawaiian religions were abolished in 1819, and Pele may be unhappy and making her presence known. In any case, respect and fear should guide those in her path to take all the necessary precautions to prevent loss of life. Pele may reclaim the lands she built, or reshape them, and humans can do nothing but watch in awe.
It sounds like this will become larger before it subsides. I sincerely hope those in the path of the lava and seemingly nearing eruption leave safely out of the way and find comfort among their family and friends. |

Pele has been adding real estate since the island emerged from the Pacific. |

No matter what the current deity of choice is, Mother Nature refuses to be bound by it's rules & occasionally reminds us of the true power of her fury, no matter how much we think that we have conquered her. If you live on/near a volcano, you should know what to expect. If you live on a fault line, you should know what to expect. If you live below sea level, on the other side of a wall from it (or you're near it & the projected storm surge is more than the level that you're at), you should know what to expect, and so on. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Lots of sympathetic remarks, thanks guys. The whole chain gets to breathe the gasses and suffer along with them. _________________

You know it's getting serious when the news is showing film of Mt. St. Helens.
Maybe not on that scale, but it sure looks like we are heading for a true eruption.
Inevitable, yes, but terrifying for those in the area. In a way, I hope it's sooner rather than later, before it builds up even more.
I live in earthquake country, and we are overdue. We will not see it coming. This is different... slow motion, which in some ways makes it harder, though safer if prepared. |

It got overwhelmed by other stories, but the increase in acreage and homes lost has been huge! This is now island construction, No matter how much I tell myself it's what made Hawaii, it's still heartbreaking to see all the loss.
On the other hand, because people are dumb, bookings have dropped 50%, even though 96% of the island is unaffected. It's a good time to find a deal. Go visit, learn and share the aloha spirit, maybe volunteer at a shelter for a day... lots of ways to get the islands inside you... it will change you. |
