Long-story-short: friend has old unknown 1600, in storage 14 years. Wants to run engine, all I got is 40-IDFs set up for a 2.2 liter.

Bolt ‘em on, we know she’ll be rich as hell, but what the hay. Put it on the stand, fire it off, and voila! Runs great…black-smoke-rich-as-hell…but runs great. Good ‘nuff…shut ‘er down.

Remove carbs, discover puddles of liquid fuel collected on the floors of the intake ports.

Is this because the carbs are dialed for the 2.2 liter, or could it be that the float bowls were overflowing?

Cold engine, way too rich of mixture. That would be my guess.

The engine is only going to suck in "x" amount of air and fuel. Any extra is going to sit in the intake track and wait its turn. Heavy fuel laden air, froms large droplets which eventually fall out of suspension.

It's common. The turn in the intake is a sharp one, which will force the fuel to fall out of suspension. That coupled with an improper A/F ratio will usually cause puddling. The port's wall texture may not be helping either.

Cool, ok, thanks for the replies. We did run it for at least 15, got it timed and idling nicely...but it was definitely gas, no mistaking that lovely fragrance!
