So here's the scoop, my car wont stay running unless I hold the key in place and as soon as I let go of the key, some sort of connect is lost and car dies:(

what can this be??

Glenn is right. Had the same problem, had to hold the key in the "ON" position to keep her going. Depending on the year, this is what fixed my 68 ignition...

If you have a bunch of keys on your key ring, try using the key alone.

I pulled the key cylinder today so I'm prepared tomorrow when I get a new switch. After pulling the cylinder, I noticed there seems to be a decent amount of play in the the Key cylinder (or what this is called lol)

It isn't the key tumbler portion that is the problem, it is the electrical contact portion.

Most often the contacts burn and corrode making poor contact as the years slip away.

Yup, as you all said it was the the switch not the tumbler. Replaced last night, unfortunately w a cheap Chinese one but what options do I have so hopefully we can get a little time out of it.
