So the pre-heat valve on my 64 squareback engine is seized solid (closed), and when I finally found a spare one, it was also seized solid ¾ open.

From what I can tell it’s not a part that is easily found for sale in good working order. So then my question is... How necessary is it? I mean, other VW engines just have the open pipe (or closed if it's clogged as a lot are) and seem to do ok. So what is the purpose? Will it run ok without it? Should I just put on the ¾ open one (or drill the guts out of it) and run it that way?

In case I wasn’t clear about what I’m talking about it’s the bit on the right side front of the engine between the heat exchanger and the preheat pipe on the manifold. (pic from gallery).

On the early cars, this piece was more like a spacer (no thermostat). I would used the original and do what you need to have it open 100%

Awesome, that’s exactly what I needed to know! thanks. If I clear the guts out if it will it affect my application for 1500 Club membership though? Wink

My '63 Squareback had the flap removed so it was basically just a spacer.

I haven't driven in really cold weather but as far as I know it didn't really affect anything to be "disabled".
