Found this plug / wire, and have no idea what its used for. Seems to be running into or from the top of the transmission bell housing, right where the engine and transmission meet. Its an ‘85 Vanagon GL, with the 4-speed Manual Trans & Gas Engine.

If I had a thousand dollars for every time that question has been posted here, I'd almost have enough money to buy a $yncro moneypit of my own.
