The rail I'm working on had a stuck brush in the alternator. Screwed with it for a while and decided I'd just replace it with a Chinese alternator. The 36MM nut that holds the blower on was tight. Tried a long breaker bar but could not hold the front pulley and get a lot of pressure on the breaker bar at the same time. So I used a rattle gun and it came off. Full of red Loctite. To get the alternator off I had to remove the intake.
Going back together the first thing that came up was the two studs that hold the plate that attaches to the shroud are smaller in diameter. Then the + stud was bigger. And using the original shims in the original place the fan belt was too loose. Don't get that at all but I moved some shims and got it right. Got it back together and it charges, but not as much as the original at idle. That's common if the replacement has a higher current output. Easily pins the 30 Amp meter just off idle. We'll see if it holds up.
Now back to the hunt for brush holders, I need two now.

Man those back plate studs were small already what 6mm? Better check the charging voltage on your new alternator see if it goes over 14 volts? I should not.
And Oh make sure the battery has all its cells operational it should rest at 12.6 volts now less. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

Update: Checked the voltage on the Chinese alternator, it's 13.5 Volts. Went to the local VW junk yard and found a bad alternator he was selling as a core. He let me swap brush holders. Put it in the 9-120-080-122 alternator and it works. Put the alternator in my lathe, hooked it to a battery and fired it up. Charges 14.5 Volts cold. Life is good:) Putting it in the lathe was a lot easier than putting in the car and finding out it wasn't.

They can overcharge a little if the battery has sulfated some, Probably make it till cold weather. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |
