This was weird, but I have some ideas what happen. Just guessing, ya sometimes cable stretch but not all at once and leave an 1" to tighten.

Thought, as I have seen cables cut through sheet metal and I guess can a more direct route.

Another is maybe the tube in the tunnel lost a spot weld and got free. If it did it would not be like the clutch cable tube which can keep you from driving the car, been there, happened to me. The cable will be ok to if some are still holding.

It is pouring rain so could not do a better inspection but the car runs fine.

Got any ideas. Oh also checked the dual carb linkage, all ok. ????

If cast poorly, the ferrule or fitting at either end can pull loose from the cable itself, too.

I would suspect linkage or clamps first, then all the other stuff.

Wow, never would have thought of that, but logical. Well hope to get back to the car tonight and test drive it. If it is that then I would suspect to happen again.

I checked tool box and found 2 new cables so I an ready.

Sometimes, the fitting of the cable sheath is tight at the rear ferrule, where it attaches to the hard metal line in the tunnel..

You have to reach up to the front of the throttle cable sheath,
Fish your fingers thru the little 2-tube oval-shaped throttle/clutch cable tube exit grommet,
And force the little ferrule down over the throttle cable tube.

If you didn't do this step,
(and many don't, it's hidden by the little 2-tube oval grommet thingie.
way up in a dark dirty place at the front of the trans),
The cable sheath might be butting up against the end of the hard cable tube,
Instead of seating aound it.
It ran like that for you a while,
Then you hit a bump or something,
and it allowed the cable sheath to finally seat clear home on the end of the hard line.
Now you got some more cable..

That's my theory... Take it FWIW..

Clatter sounds extremely possible seeing this is a 914 T-4 conversion and what you said could have happened. The Gen/s Alt stand controls the height of the fanhousing, so the angle could have been off for a long time..

Crazy how when you think of how simple it seems as just a simple cable connected on each, but look at all the variables we found already.

OK So after tightening the cable after it pulled off the amazing growing an Inch trick, I get in the bug drive up and down mountain roads and the car runs great, so we may never find out what made it grow that inch.

Still have 2 spare cables in the truck.

Just another Typical VW story!!!

Do you distinctly remember reaching up above the front trans mount,
And seating the throttle cable sheath around the hard line in the tunnel??

Unless you take and force it into place,
It won't seat home.

At least with the throttle cables I have been finding for the last 15 years or so..

Clatter that cable has been in that position over 15 years........... after what you said , made me think about something I did that may have fixed the problem with out me realizing it.

After saw the slack in the cable I pulled it out of the pedal and took a vice grip to it to make the end square so it could not slip out. Not thinking because it was not square was way it may have slipped put of the pedal a bit.. I went back to loose it then squared it. The tighten it. After 15 or more years the end got out of shape. That metal is extremely tough. Had a hard time bending it, but constant on and off the pedal for over 15 years can slowly move it.
Most logical as of yet..
