Can anybody tell me how can I remove the VIN sticker on the door jamb without breaking it? Do I need a special tool? Is it even possible?

Yea, you should be able to use a dremel with a cutoff wheel. Just cut the metal around the sticker, being careful to not hit the sticker.

^^????

Your best bet is to remove it and get a reproduction sticker.

Can I heat up the glue? Or will that damage the sticker?

Sorry Ringo it’s a tamperproof sticker designed to come off in pieces if you try to remove it.

The sticker is designed to be impossible to peel off and re use on purpose, either tape it off or get a fresh one, there's no way that one will come off in one peice and ever be a sticker again.

It is an anti tamper sticker so any peeling or scraping will just cause it to break apart due to the circular pattern. Heating will just distort it an it will turn brown. It’s really not worth your time to try and peel it the link mentioned above is your best bet. If you want the original get high quality painters tape and a exacto knife and tape it off I deal with similar tape for SOLAS year at work it a pain to remove and always breaks apart.

for ultimate originality, keep the sticker attached, as repro stickers are almost always not exact in every detail. if you paint around a masked sticker, the new paint will be raised up in thickness around the sticker, a sign that the cars has been repainted. so mask the sticker and carefully detail hand sand the original paint around it down a layer or so. taper the sanded area away from the sticker, then repaint. As you have already reduced the original paint thickness around the sticker, the new paint layer will come up to the correct height relative to the sticker. its tricky, you may need to do some fine detail color sanding of the new paint to remove any ridge of paint caused by masking tape edge, but you will be rewarded with an original sticker with original look paint around it.

Good Luck, Stick To It, and Bug On!

Put down the heat gun.

Put down the cut off wheel.

It is illegal to tamper, alter, or otherwise mess with identifying number plates, stickers, stamping.

Leave the sticker be. If you are going to paint, use good quality masking tape and a steady hand.

Otherwise, don't touch it or mess with it. It's the law, man.

Read b,2,b.

Not ilegal to remove it destroy if it's necessary as part of the repair. However, a copy VIN tag would certainly be illegal.

If you want to keep it original, mask it off for paint. If your trying to put it on another car.. Shame on you
