|

I have a 79 bus. Regarding removing the distributor, the Bentley manual says "hand-turn the engine's crankshaft until the rotor tip points to the No. 1 cylinder mark on the distributor body". What cylinder mark? I don't see any. Can somebody post a picture? The manual has a picture, but for the life of me I cannot make out what it's trying to show me. Thanks in advance. |

First, all you need to do is loosen the clamp and pull the distributor out. It can only go in one way unlike some other engines. You don’t need to rotate the engine until the rotor points to the index mark. On the lip of the distributor body where the cap rides is an index mark. A small radial indentation about 1/16 long on the lip. Look where the cap takes #1 wire. That’s where the mark will be _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Assuming the wires are now on the cap correctly the mark will correspond to the location of the #1 spark plug wire. If the wires are for some reason rotated around the cap from the factory position the mark will not align with the #1 plug wire, but with one of the other wires.
Figure out which wire on the cap is the #1 wire and make a paint mark on the body below that tower, this will be the same as having the mark punched in the rim of the distributor.
I agree that if you are not going to mess with the distributor drive, it really doesn't matter if the engine is set at TDC for #1 or not. |

also - if it is a 1979 California distributor be very careful with the connector and wires. Those parts are hard to come by. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Anytime I remove the distributor, I like to be at TDC for #1 cylinder.
Find the notch on the cooling fan and line that up with 0º on the timing scale.
Not all distributors have that line on there where the #1 spark plug wire is getting ready to fire.
