|

Hey guys/gals, I'm looking to install the assist straps in my 71 transporter. Are they supposed to be in a regular transporter? I thought it was a deluxe but it's only a 221. Let me know if they are supposed to be in my bus and where they are mounted. How they are mounted wouldn't be bad either! Pictures are much appreciated.
If I missed these details found in another tread, please point me to it. I searched for assist strap, pull strap, assist, pull, coat hook, coat, and browsed through the photo gallery under the search of "71" for interior shots and didn't find what I was looking for.
thanks again...

A 1971 type 22 (Standard microbus, AKA Stationwagon in North America) had all those fancy space age grab handles in the headliner so no need for those horse and buggy era straps.
You could put them in if you are bent on having stuff hanging on the window posts, but it didn't roll off the boat with any. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I thought they might have been on the passenger side B and C pillars to help get up into the bus. I have those headliner grab bars installed but they don't assist with entry.
No, I'm not inclined to install them if they don't go with. So they don't go in this model then? What were they for? The part number is 241857613A.
In addition to the straps, what about the little button coat hooks?

The modern space age generation didn't need no stinking help to get up into a bus, or thier enlightened and super nurturing parents gave them a lift. Split bus' used them up to 67, Westfalia used some in early bay campers, later bugs used them as well. The mushroom coat hooks go on both B pillars (2 on passenger side) as well as 1 on each C pillar in a Stationwagon (fronts also held seatbelt hooks).
Have a look at some early bay literature as well as the 71 brochure (which features a 70 tarted up with the new paint job) and tell me how many you see. You'll also notice the 68 doesn't have any handles in the ceiling, that started in 71.

My ‘71 Westy has them. How else can I hang on when all of that acceleration is unleashed? _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

Thanks Tcash.
Xevin, I'll have to go looking again because I don't remember where it is right now. I found it yesterday while I was looking through all of the brochures for 68 and later. It was a picture of a transporter or station wagon with a strap and a single coat hook on the C pillar behind the sliding door. That being said, there are a lot more photos without it. |

My 73 westfalia had one or 2 of those straps. Maybe it's a Westfalia thing? C pillar is correct for a 73 westy anyway..
