|
|
Hi everyone. I have always been a beetle or a bus owner but never a type 3 owner that is until a few days ago. As soon as I seen this car I had to have it. I have always wanted a squareback so it was time to make it happen. It’s a 1967 squareback. The previous owner had replaced all the brakes and swapped everything to wide 5 bolt pattern wihout using wheel adapters. Got it running reallly nice, narrowed the front control arms. It was a barn find car and was last registered in 1982. It even had the original owners manual with a stamp where the car was originally sold. I plan on using this thread as my build thread and hopefully you t3 experts will have the patience and answers to help/guide me along my journey with my first squareback.
My first order of business is to replace the tie rod ends and align the car. It has a real bad wobble in the front end. Tie rods are bad and the right front wheel is had to much toe out.
Next will be to find some wheels that will give me a little more clearance. Been looking at the cosmic wheels in the 5x205 sold through CIP. Those wheels will give me 4 inches of back spacing which should give me more wheel to fender clearance front and rear?
Then I want to tackle replacing all the dry rotted rubber.. most of it sourced and ordered. Replacing that window trim should be fun..
Anything I should know about owning a type 3? Any suggestions, comments are welcome. I will update this thread the more I work on this car.

Tighten up your front torsion bars as they get loose. Directions in the brown Type 3 manual by Bentley. The Autopress Type 3 manual for 65-70 is good for the carburetors etc. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Thanks! That visor is pretty rad. I have been finding out very quickly within the last few days how different these cars are compared to beetles. They ride so much better than any other beetle I have owned and sure do get alot more questions and looks also. |

I will have to pick up a bentley manual. I have an old manual that came with the car that fits in the glove box. How can you tell when the torsion bars get loose? |

Yes, this is important for safety as well as handling. It is unique to the Type 3, so your Bug and Bus buddies won't have any idea what you are talking about.
If you jack up the whole front axle, and have someone push-pull on the tire at various angles, while you are underneath watching/feeling where the top passenger torsion arm goes into the axle housing, you will see or feel the play. There shouldn't be any. If you sense any, then find the adjustment procedure in a Bentley or other manual, and tighten it up (but not too tight). It's something to check whenever you have the front end up, like for a lube service. Good to check all parts for play at the same time. |

Great looking Square!!! These cars are lots of fun and there's a bunch of cool stuff you can do to them. That sun-visor is super rad! Looking for one of those for my '69 at the moment. Paint looks pretty nice and I dig those low-back seats. Wish mine had those.
As for what to look for in the Square...I'd definitely check the shift coupler and the shift bushing in the tunnel. Chances are it's time to at least change the bushing in the tunnel just to avoid bad issues later. If you have some $$$, a shifter upgrade is always nice. I went to a Black Mamba from Vintage Speed and I love it! Shifts soooo smooth, looks great, and reduced the throw a ton. Inspect and (if needed) replace your fuel lines. And check that the engine tin is all there.
What's it got for an engine? Any big plans for upgrades or customization? _________________ Dave

This car was gone through before I purchased it. This car was a barn find with many other VW’s and the guy I purchased it from had his mechanic go through it and sort it all out as the owner wanted to drive it. It has alot of new parts on it and only needed minor things sorted when I came along. So far I have sorted the non working lights, which most of it was corroded contacts or bad bulbs. Repaired the horn wire as it was broke in two. Adjust the clutch as there is to much travel. It runs fantastic but has a real bad low speed wobble which turns out that the inner tie rod ends have a little play in them so I’m gonna replace them all and then align it as the alignment is currently way out of whack now..
My plans for this car is to use it as my daily. I have always had some kind of VW in my life and used to DD all my VW’s. So I have ordered wiper arms, all new window rubber, various other rubber seals and gaskets. A nicer set of wheels and will put fresh rubber on them as well. I’m gonna try and buff out the paint, replace the dash pad, eventually get new carpet and clean the og interior the best I can as it’s only original once and in pretty decent shape.
I will probably drivw it that way for awhile the try to eventually hunt down a roof rack or build one, replace the stock shifter with something nicer and then maybe get me a nice custom steering wheel and a rear safari window. I would like to do the type 1 conversion beam as well, but for now I will enjoy it the way it is until I decide if I really want to drop it any lower. |

Yes Sir. Bought in Kansas City, Missouri. Car was purchased new in MO. It has a dealer stamp on the inside of the original owners manual. I would assume that could be the dealer had probably sold it. |

The correct book for a 1967 is the BLUE Bentley. The brown one starts with 1968 models. |

True, but that procedure is the same for all models. Actually, there's a wealth of info right on here for free:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/looklistendoitbetter.php
This shows the exact procedure on p. 15 here:

If someone is going to give advice - shouldn't it be correct? There's a lot in the brown book that doesn't apply to the 67 and earlier cars. |
