Let me hear about them!
Things that have made your bug more driveable or more fun to drive or have solved some of the bug’s known “issues”

... am not a fan of extras on my VWs..,. the simpler, the better. The first VW, I had was a 1965 bug, purchased new in1966.. it had zero accessories and even a radio delete... really liked the ones from, up to 1961 with no gas gauge, just a speedo...
All my VWs today, sport a radio-delete and no antenna. Although, one of my '55s (has, not by choice) an extra (amp) gauge, a windshield washer pump (which I removed), an auxiliary gas heater (which I never use or even tried to see if it functions) and rear pop-out windows (which, I must say - I love)
The only accessory, all my type one cars have is a carry-over design from the pre 10/1952 era - a removable access panel behind the rear seat... originally used to access the trans filler plug.
Since, I have been spoiled, owning at least 5 early, very basic split bugs with this access panel - to easily reach the 2 upper engine bolts, fuel filter, starter and connections, easier trans filler access and easier clutch adjusting access... I consider this the accessory VW abandoned for the do-it-yourselfer or senior citizen who has a tough time reaching all this from the bottom - underneath.
This is the number one accessory, I construct in all my type one vehicles, including Karman Ghia and the first thing I did on my relatively-expensive five-figure '55 bug.

This doesn't look very attractive in this instance, what does it look like on the splitties? I have an oval that someone hacked an access hatch with appears to have been a hammer, chisel, & can opener, this would be a great way to patch this damage without having to replace the whole firewall.
Eh, mine is a lot worse than I remembered.

... oh sorry, you don't approve or like the look... I just do the best I can... never think about attractive... think more of function AND besides, once the cover is secure and the German square weave is rolled over it to cover my work, no one would be the wiser of this GREAT accessory and my unsightly (to some) handiwork.
I have learned, in my 70 years to do what works for me and not be too concerned what others think. I am used to other points of view that differ. We all can't agree on everything as there are many ways to view everything...
Yeah, looks like your access might need a little tidying up.. the PO had a great idea, just cut it differently than the way I did... I trust you'll take care of it nicely... what a great accessory, for the future... cover it and keep it to yourself and no one will be the wiser, LOL unless you're like me and want to boast 'bout a great idea... cheers! _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

Sorry. WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!! Would you happen to have pictures of the factory access hatch that you could share with us? _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Quarter pop-outs, sliding Sunroof, and the vent wing windows. Moves a ton of air. More options than accessories though.
My favorite accessory is my bamboo parcel tray. Super handy and vintage look. I like my roof racks too. Easy to put on and off depending on look or need. Clear tubing and felt pads and no paint issues. |

Thanks for the replies guys. That hatch is awesome. I should consider it myself. I went with pop outs also. I guess there is better wind movement with them. I had one piece windows on my first bug and people have told me to steer clear of them-lots of problems-so I kept my vents on this bug.
Is a battery cutoff switch necessary?
What about the oil temp thing that attaches to your dipstick?
Or an alternator instead of a generator?
And I’m doing the headliner soon-what type of material for the roof? Jute? Quick roof? I don’t want it to fall off when it’s hot out. |

I've never done the cutoff switch or oil pressure dipstick thing. I've had great success with the perforated vinyl headliners. |

I put little changes in my old Bugs (and my current Fastback) using VW parts from later/earlier/other models. Kept the Wolfsburg blood intact, and made it easy to find parts should something go wrong (back when there were VW parts stores and dealers everywhere).
This included little bits like pop-outs, foglamps, amber turn lenses, a highback driver seat in my '67 for safety, added fusebox (original located on the passenger side where there was a pressing for a stock fusebox for RHD cars), backup lamps on my '65; for the Type 3, side parking lights, pop-outs and a factory sunroof on my fastback, 3-point inertial belts... H4 halogen headlamps and headlamp flasher (passing) relay for both...
I felt these were changes VW would (or did) do to improve things, but not to just keep up new appearances, just make it more practical, comfortable, reliable, etc. Nothing dramatic. |

The coolest thing I've put on my bug are some of Randee's extended pop out latches on my oval rag ( Thanks RareAir) and a Dehne Fuel gauge i'm currently restoring for my Vert. On my list is a Perohaus clock. _________________ F#CK CANCER
