A certain thread started today that got me thinking. We all love to talk about the great deals we got years ago. So lets hear them.
Here is a find from 2003 back in the good old days of ebay, when you could search for typo errors and not many people would see them. I bought this pair of busses for $300. Bad news was they were in Pueblo Co. So I made the trip to get them on the weekend of the rocky mountain motorworks show and the drag/swapmeet show west of Denver. Thinking I would pick the 60 kombi up and sale it at the swap meet and pick the 58 up on the way home(only having an 18 foot trailer). So my Girlfriend and I spend the day trying to sell the bus dropping the price down to $500 still no takers. Even trying to trade the complete bus for a set of ambulance fans, the guy wouldn't do it. So we go back to the hotel in Colorado Springs and I strip it in the parking lot, all glass and doors. The next day on a Monday I look in yellow pages and find a scrap dealer. I gave them the shell if they would cut the nose off from the front floor forward and cut the frame and drop trans out. Sad part is this bus was really straight and only needed the drivers inner and outer rocker and a 10"x10" hole in the middle of the roof for a vent, no rust at all.
Made it home with 1.25 busses
I've probably got enough old cheap and or free finds for 5 pages of this thread but will do just this one for now.
Lets see more old great deal finds. |

1960 23 window, for splitting 5 cords of oak firewood, in 1995
A very solid 1962 SO-33 inn2007 for $50... still have it
1960 single in 1995 for $350, not running for $350... still have it
... this is too easy. I have had an incredible number of real inexpensive VWs in the past 45 years... here's a 1950 11G for $250 and a 1300 running engine...
1955 Messerschmitt KR-175 running for $600 in 1975
3/1955 body in 2012 for $100... now on a 1965 pan... still have it

That was a great deal Bernie. The double cab I traded you for that bus cost me $300 plus gas and the 2 days I spent to get it and trading you. You got a better deal than I did. |

Full cords... the owner of the salvage said, after I enjoyed splitting wood all day, "I wish I could pay you some how" and I replied, you can give me that yellow bus and she said, "done"! _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

I gave you more for that breadbox than 75% of busses I have bought. Now I need another one. I should have made replica's when I had that one |

Driving home my 1967 21 window in 1990 from Chagrin Falls, Ohio. It took two years of negotiations but Craig let me have it for $1500. It was his daily driver: the really good stuff was in his basement.
I sold it 2004 and bought a 13 window with good metal. If we had the restoration skills availability back then that we have now, I would still be driving that bus. |

I found this old receipt and ownership for a 1969 Beetle that I bought back in Aug 1979 for $10. I bought the car for the motor, but it would have easily been roadworthy. I kept it as a parts car for a few years and then junked it.
This wasn't the only Bug I bought for less than $100 for parts, it is amazing how cheap they were. All of the ones I bought would be worth a lot more today:
