Add some photos. I removed the idler assembly on my 1971 Super 2 decades ago to get the idler bushing replaced, but 1971 may be different. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Are you talking about the correct part? The idler arm is on the opposite side of the steering box. The arm connected to the Steering box I think is called the Pitman arm. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Yes, you are correct the pitman arm connected to the '74 steering box. _________________ 1974 1303 |

Did you remove the bolt completely? Assuming its the same as a standard, there is a detent for the bolt and you cant remove unless the bolt is completely out. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

GearWrench 3916D Universal Ball Joint Separator
I use this for tie rods and ball joints both, hope you are rebuilding the steering as it is shot.
On another note not a big deal but your tie rods are oriented the wrong way, the nut should be up by the drag link |

Ok, so was able to remove the track rod from the drop arm, by using a ball joint splitter. Was able to confirm that the uv joint is at fault, as steering was still lumpy. So new uv joint ordered, now to replace for first time😳 _________________ 1974 1303 |
