|
|
Wolfsburg West's painted hubcaps are the wrong depth. I just had all my wheels powdercoated and being lazy ordered a set painted hubcaps. I went to put them on and promptly bent the crap out of 3 hubcap clips on the rear wheel. I had just replaced them all before powdercoating and was suprised at what was happening. So I persisted and the harder I tried to make the hubcap stay on the faster it would pop off. I took a hard look at it and the emblem in the hubcap was all dinged out. It was bottoming out on the rear axle nut. So I layed them on a table and compared to a German hubcap and found they are nearly 3/8" an inch to shallow. By themselves they look great and proportional but they are just wrong. So any one else out there in the market for some WW painted hubcaps beware! So tonight I found four old chrome german caps that are 90% good and scuffed the caps with 430 grit wet sand paper and used some real good metal etching primer and sprayed them in L345 grey paint like I should of before ordering the others, funny how sometimes things go full circle! |

No Nick it's an informational warning to bus people that may buy a hubcap, that's why it is posted in the BUS FORUM |

Could be the difference between Brazilian and Mexican or Italian or it could have been a bad batch, I am going to check with Rich at WW on Monday he's real good about getting to the bottom of this kind of thing! |

spooky--where did you get the hubcap clips from? most of the aftermarket clips are junk and don't work well. i've not ever had a problem when i used new, genuine VW hubcap clips (still available through VW) regardless of which hubcaps i stuck on. i've heard many horror stories with aftermarket clips though. _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

Once again WW for the clips but they have two types round head rivets or flat head rivets. I use the round heads as my rivet tool doesn't work well with the flat ones. I believe the round headed ones are VW Brazil. |

i don't think the rivets have too much to do with it. i have seen WW clips, and they are not the best. why not buy real VW ones?
if they look like the ones on their website, those are the shitty kind. you should throw them away and get real clips.

real VW clips and rivets are about $1.25 each (that's $1.25 for 1 clip and 1 rivet) from VW last time i bought some. _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

I checked with the local VW Dealership and no one has the original clips, they checked their database accross Canada and the US.
Split pile... could I buy some from you? Let me know.. (could use 20) |

I have a set of the WW Powder Coated caps on my 67 Crew. They are identical in depth to the old rusty chrome ones that came off. I was actually very impressed with the thickness of the metal and the coating. One of mine had a very small scuff on the logo and WW said send it back for replacement no problem.
So I would suggesting talking to WW before concluding that they are all wrong.
Mine were purchased late Feb. Here they are on my freshly enameled silver white rims...

well that must have happened in the last two months, because that's the last time i bought some from vw.
guess i'll get some from oeveedub.

anyway, back to the original complaint, if the hubcaps are too short and they hit the axle nut (damn big nut reduction boxes), then it needs to be corrected. but what is 3/8" ??? _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?
