Hey everyone!
I have about 3 - 4 inches of play in the steering of my 78 bus. I hopped under the bus and noticed that the play is starting inside of the steering box, not after it. Today I purchased all of the tools for a "Phase 2" tool kit as described in the John Muir - How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive.
After searching the forum I have found little tid-bits of how to check the different components of the steering system, but no definitive procedures. I have ordered both the Haynes and Bentley manuals, but they will not be here for a few days!
Could anyone point me in the direction of a good diagnostic procedure before I jack up the bus up?

There's an adjustment screw on the side of the steering box. Loosen the lock nut, 19mm I think, and turn the screw in until the play is gone. The drag link should be disconnected from the steering box drop arm so you don't over tighten the adjustment screw. The steering wheel should turn freely, lock to lock, with absolutely no binding. _________________ Joey

Have someone turn the steering wheel while you inspect the drag link ends, center link and tie rod ends.

maybe this will help. Be sure you keep it full of gear lube.

This worked beautifully. Thank you so much kent. Is the steering wheel supposed to come back to center on its own after making a turn? I don’t know if it was doing it before, but it’s definitely not now haha. |
