Hey!
Long time reader here, but haven't a lot yet. So I thought it was time for me to share my project here at The Samba.
My bus is called Belinda. She is a 1974 1800cc Type 4 camper. When I bought her she had an ugly high roof that was a pig job to drive when it was windy.
She ran and drove fine when I bought her. Started to act up after a little while. Backfires and not running properly. So I decided to rebuild the carburetors. After I did that, I realized that I didn't know jack sh*t about tuning and syncing carburetors. With the help from Ratwell, it did turn out pretty good though.
But, onwards upwards. I like computers a lot more than old mechanical things. So I decided that I want to convert Belinda to EFI. Not the old (and to some, pretty bad) VW EFI. Noooo. I decided that I want to this with a speeduino. An open source ecu that highly tunable.
Right now, I'm rebuilding the engine, because of a pretty worn out crankshaft (crankshark).
Somewhere along the way, I also decided that I wanted to make a Youtube show about my build.
Here's the first episode. There are more of them on the channel.

Guru, am I correct in assuming you're familiar with '123 Ignition' as well? If not, you should look into that as a companion to your FI system. These are quite effective in masking sins and improving efficiency, and are programmable with a laptop as well.

No, that's something new to me. I can see that it's a programmable distributor, pretty much.
The Speeduino ECU does handle both ignition and the FI. I will put a trigger wheel and a hall sensor behind the fan. Think of the Speeduino as an open source Megasquirt.
But hey, thanks anyway! _________________ #ecobus

Great project, looking forward to the updates.

As of today, I haven't found any Speeduino builds for a Type 4 engine |
So what are exactly your plans for getting the Speeduino firmware to work on the bus? I'm thinking of the most essential part: how are you planning to figure out the fuel map and spray the right amount of fuel per working cycle on this particular engine?
Oh, and what made you decide for Speeduino instead of (Micro/Mega)Squirt? _________________ '79 Westy, P22 interior, FI 2.0 l Federal, GE engine (hydraulic lifters)

Oh, and what made you decide for Speeduino instead of (Micro/Mega)Squirt? |
The Speeduino supports four cylinder sequential injection. So that won't be a problem. When it comes to mapping, it's a whole different story. That's a new territory for me. The main thing for me is getting the engine a bit more fuel efficient, but taking in mind that an aircooled engine needs to run a little bit rich in order to stay cool.
The Speeduino has a base map which apparently makes most engines start. So I'll start from that map and tune it. I will also install a WBO/lambda sensor to monitor the exhaust gases. There will be an oil temp sender and perhaps also a cylinder head temp sender. I hope that these sensor will help me enough to get a decent tune. If they don't, I will resort to taking the bus to a dyno and have them map it. Speeduino is fully compatible with TunerStudio which is used to map Megasquirts.
I decided to go with Speeduino instead of Megasquirt because I like open source software. Speeduino can be built and modified by anyone. Feels a lot better than relying on a big company which might drop support for my ECU. It's also a lot of fun to follow the development of Speeduino. _________________ #ecobus

Check this out a bit, you may lean a little about mapping these engines. This is on carbs, but there is a lot of good discussion on timing vs afr at different throttle positions.

Thanks for the answers. While not planning to change my stock FI system, I'm always interested in seeing how more modern systems can make a bus run, hence the questions.

Stock FI on busses is batch injection, but you seem to imply that sequential injection is a requirement. Why?

That sounds promising, best of luck! _________________ '79 Westy, P22 interior, FI 2.0 l Federal, GE engine (hydraulic lifters)

My bad, batch injection it is! I just had sequential somewhere in my head, but that was completely wrong.
Thanks! very interesting! Just subscribed to that thread.
You obviously have watched the first episode. But for those who haven't, my final goal with Belinda is to have here electric powered. But that's sometime in the future. Right now the Speeduino is my main focus.
And also, thanks for that welcome message. That's good stuff to know and keeps the forums tidy, I guess.[/quote] _________________ #ecobus

Just thought I would give you guys an idea of where I am right now in my build.
A lot of time has been consumed, while planning and figuring out how I should do some things, like mounting the EV6 injectors. Fuel systems also seem to give me a bit of an headache.
Yesterday I joined the case halves and today the flywheel was about to go on.
Meanwhile, I'll continue to post the videos I have made so far. Here's episode two.

Can't your videos be removed for copy right infringement. I've heard you tubers mention that they are only allowed to play so many seconds of a performer, or they will get there video pulled.
Good luck

Maybe he is friends with the performers. Also, copyright and performance rights law is complicated and even more so with advent of digitization and the internet. It also depends on who owns the copyright. A nobody like me might be happy to have someone use their music, just because of the exposure. A Star on the other hand is already known and wants per play or per copy royalties. Or at least their publisher does. Also, a nobody would want per play royalties and up front payment if say a General Motors or Anheuser Busch decided to use their music just as would a Star because GM and AB would be using the music to benefit their bottom line. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

The jingle is made by my friends. I'm very thankful for it!
Knut just stood beside me and he was very happy and said thanks for your comment!

Thanks! As I have been a performer for ten years myself, I'm very cautious about licenses. Artist should get payed for their work!
I'm strictly sticking to music that's licensed for free commercial use. A lot of it comes from CC Mixter. I make sure to always credit the artist.
The channel isn't commercial right now. But if the channel would grow a lot, I want to be safe. Call it future proofing.

I'm sure if you describe what your issues are, someone could probably give you a hand. Out of interest, which exact injectors are you using?
As I said, I'm not an expert with non-stock FI setups, this thread for instance seems to give a couple of approaches you could consider:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=669008
The pictures below are from that thread (credit to the original authors).
1) Build a fuel rail that acts both as a support for the injectors and a place to plug them in (if they're of the o-ring type instead of the original hose type). I guess the tricky part is to find a modern injector type where the noozle end fits without air leaks into the intake manifold:
2) Use an o-ring to hose connection adapter and the original fuel ring (these are EV1 body style injectors, but the principle would be the same for EV6 injectors)

Thanks for the post Furgo!
The EV6 injectors I'm going to use are from an Alfa 156, that we killed in an endurance race.
That part is already solved actually. I designed and 3D-printed an adapter to make them fit the original EV1 mount. The rail will be one that I found on a Opel/Vauxhall at a junkyard.
Here's how my adapter fits together.

Ah, nice, ingeniously solved.
How's the fit to the intake runners, though? Does the nozzle end with the O-Ring fit well and airtight without further modifications?
I can see one injector mounted on the foreground of your video, but I can't really tell.
Looks like you've got Bosch's 0 280 156 038 injectors:
