reverse is not the strongest gear. I would be leery of roll starting in reverse.

next will be how to pick up the pieces of the transaxle case once you've rolled past the debris field.
it is not recommended to roll start in reverse..

I should have said bump starting in reverse is total Silent Harmful Ignition Technique.....

| It jerks the heck out of the tranny and clutch to start the engine in first, it would be an act of desperation to do it in reverse. I use third if I can get up enough speed and second if I can't. |

The dumb idea of jump-starting a manual trans vehicle in reverse reminds me of the time a customer complained that his brakes were so bad, he tried to stop his automatic trans car by shifting to the Park position. He said that he was surprised that it didn't work, and that the trans no longer had a "park" function. Oh well.

I've roll started my buses, both forward and reverse, several times with no issues. It's all in the way you let the clutch out. Yeah, quickly releasing the clutch pedal is probably not good for the transmission or the engine. I let it out slowly so there's no sudden slamming contact on any of the parts.
